Changes in global nutrient cycles as a result of industrialization affect both ecosystems and human well-being. A clear example of human manipulation on ecosystems is eutrophication; a phenomenon caused in receiving water bodies by discharge of urban sewage rich in nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Microalgal nutrient removal is a viable alternative for biological wastewater treatment, considering high nutrient uptake capabilities of microalgae. These systems are also advantageous in terms of nutrient recycling and conversion into microalgal biomass, which, in turn, is a beneficial resource for biofuel production. In addition, microalgae can also aid reduction in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, as a result of photosynthetic anabolism. In this study, a semi-continuous photobioreactor was operated for investigation of nutrient removal efficiency of unialgal culture, Chlorella vulgaris. Maximum N and P removal efficiencies of 99.6% and 91.2% were achieved in the photobioreactor. Biogas production from biomass obtained from semicontinuous photobioreactor was investigated via Biochemical Methane Potential assays. The results illustrated that maximum biogas yield of 442ml/g Volatile Solids (VS) added could be achieved in anaerobic batch reactors fed with microalgal slurry. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Integrated nutrient removal and biogas production using microalgal and anaerobic microbial cultures
Çalıcıoğlu, Ayşe Özgül; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Department of Environmental Engineering (2013)
Following industrialization and urbanization, there have been significant impairments in key nutrient cycles, affecting both ecosystems and human well-being. Urban sewage is rich in nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, which cause eutrophication in receiving water bodies, if not removed. Microalgal nutrient removal is a viable alternative for biological wastewater treatment, considering their high nutrient uptake capabilities of microalgae. These systems are also advantageous in terms of nutrient recy...
Operating policies for energy generation and revenue management in single-reservoir hydropower systems
Ak, Mumtaz; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Savaşaneril Tüfekci, Seçil (Elsevier BV, 2017-10-01)
We study the reservoir management problem in hydropower plants, and propose operating policies to maximize the average annual energy generation or the average annual revenue. Under revenue maximization, our policies allow for short-term electricity price variations to be incorporated into the long-term plan. First, we provide a detailed review of hydropower plant operation, focusing on implicit stochastic optimization approaches and integration of energy price variations in reservoir management. Then, we ex...
Development of new monthly global and diffuse solar irradiation estimation methodologies and comparisons
Karaveli, Abdullah Bugrahan; Akınoğlu, Bülent Gültekin (Informa UK Limited, 2018-01-01)
In assessing and deciding the prediction schemes of solar irradiation countrywide, better the accuracy means better the management of energy transition toward renewables. Consequently, the present study is on the development of new models to make the most accurate possible estimations of the global and diffuse solar irradiation based on ground measurements. Such analysis produces the most accurate estimations for the input of solar energy systems. This is utmost significant for deciding the investments on s...
Solar generated steam injection in heavy oil reservoirs: A case study
Afsar, Cansu; Akın, Serhat (Elsevier BV, 2016-06-01)
Combination of solar generated steam technology and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques have attracted a great deal of attention due to its positive impact on economics and on the environment. Solar steam project has already proven itself as it can reduce both gas consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 80%. However, operational issues as well as geographical factors (i.e. terrain suitability, drill sites and future field development plans) may affect solar EOR operations. In this study, a heavy oil field...
Comparisons and critical assessment of global and diffuse solar irradiation estimation methodologies
Karaveli, Abdullah Bugrahan; Akınoğlu, Bülent Gültekin (Informa UK Limited, 2018-01-01)
Defining better methodologies of accurate predictions of the amount of monthly mean daily global and diffuse solar irradiation exposed is of utmost importance in order to determine the potential for utilizing the solar energy. This study compares and discusses the main methodologies, databases, and software that are used in estimating the solar irradiation to be used for the short- and long-term performances and feasibilities of solar energy systems, especially photovoltaic power plants in Turkey, and addre...
