Nylon 6 (PA6)/Glass Mat (GM) composites and pure PA6 were prepared by compression molding technique and the effects of molding temperature, pressure application time and GM content on the final properties of the materials were investigated. At each temperature and pressure application time, the composite with one layer GM had higher tensile strength, tensile modulus but lower % elongation at break than neat PA6. Processing parameters did not significantly influence the tensile behavior of the pure PA6 and PA6/GM composites. The effect of GM content showed that tensile strength and modulus increased but the % elongation at break decreased with increasing GM content. Thermal properties of the neat PA6 and the composites providing sufficient melting point temperature and crystallinity were found to be unaffected with different process temperature, pressure application time and GM content.

Influences of liquid elastomer additive on the behavior of short glass fiber reinforced epoxy
Arikan, A; Kaynak, Cevdet; Tincer, T (Wiley, 2002-10-01)
In this study, improvements in mechanical and thermal behavior of short glass fiber (GF) reinforced diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) based epoxy with hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) modification have been studied. A silane coupling agent (SCA) with a rubber reactive group was also used to improve the interfacial adhesion between glass fibers and an epoxy matrix. 10, 20, and 30 wt% GF reinforced composite specimens were prepared with and without silane coupling agent treatment of fibers and a...
Effect of carbon fiber amount and length on flame retardant and mechanical properties of intumescent polypropylene composites
ATABEK SAVAŞ, Lemiye; Mutlu, Aysenur; Dike, Ali Sinan; Tayfun, Umit; DOĞAN, Mehmet (SAGE Publications, 2018-02-01)
The effects of carbon fiber amount and length were studied on the flame retardant, thermal, and mechanical properties of the intumescent polypropylene composites. The flame retardant properties of the intumescent polypropylene-based composites were investigated using limiting oxygen index, vertical burning test (UL-94), and mass loss calorimeter. The mechanical properties of the composites were studied using tensile test and dynamic mechanical analysis. According to the flammability tests results, the antag...
Contribution of carbon nanotubes to vibration damping behavior of epoxy and its carbon fiber composites
Avil, Esma; Kadioglu, Ferhat; Kaynak, Cevdet (SAGE Publications, 2020-04-01)
The main objective of this study was to investigate contribution of the non-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes on the vibration damping behavior of first neat epoxy resin and then unidirectional and bidirectional continuous carbon fiber reinforced epoxy matrix composites. Epoxy/carbon nanotubes nanocomposites were produced by ultrasonic solution mixing method, while the continuous carbon fiber reinforced composite laminates were obtained via resin-infusion technique. Vibration analysis data of the...
Effects of mold temperature and vacuum in resin transfer molding
Akgül, Eralp; Kaynak, Cevdet; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2006)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mold temperature, initial resin temperature, and the vacuum, applied at resin exit ports, on the mechanical properties of epoxy matrix woven glasss fiber reinforced composite specimens produced by Resin Transfer Molding (RTM). For this purpose, six different mold temperatures (25º, 40º, 60º, 80º, 100º, and 120ºC), two initial resin temperatures (15º and 28ºC), and vacuum (0.03 bar) and without vacuum (~1 bar) conditions were used. Specimens were ch...
Effects of induction heating parameters on forging billet temperature
Durukan, İlker; Gökler, Mustafa İlhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2007)
Induction heating is one of the efficient and modern technique for heating raw materials for hot forging process. The induction heating furnaces use electro-magnetic field to transfer energy to the metal workpiece and heat is generated inside the material. The magnetic field can be provided by using induction coil. The power supplied to induction coil, the moving speed of the billet that is called conveyor speed and the coil box hole diameter are the factors affecting the resultant temperature of the heated...
