Allylthiourea was polymerized by constant current electroinitiation in acetonitrile using tetrabutylammonium fluoroborate as supporting electrolyte. The polymer obtained was insoluble in common organic solvents. FTIR studies showed that polymerization propagates by addition through the C=C double bond. The cyclic voltammogram of the monomer gave two irreversible oxidation peaks at + 1.3 V and + 2.4 V versus Ag-degree/Ag+ reference electrode at 25-degrees-C. Polymerization at room temperature gave a limiting conversion of about 10% for 2mA current and 30% for 5 mA current, in acetonitrile. Higher initial rates were obtained when dichloroethane was used as solvent.

Electrochemical polymerization and characterization of polyether-substituted aniline derivatives
Tirkeş, Süha; Oenal, Ahmet M. (Wiley, 2007-08-01)
New compounds consisting of aniline units linked by polyether bridges have been synthesized and their electrochemical polymerization was performed via constant potential electrolysis and cyclic voltammetry in an aqueous solution containing 3.0 moI L-1 H2SO4. Chemical polymerization was carried out using (NH4)(2)S2O8 as oxidizing agent. It was found that both methods gave the same polymer product without any cleavage of the polyether bridge between aniline rings. The polymers were characterized using the Fou...
Polymerization and dipole moment of poly(allyl cyanide)
Küçükyavuz, Zühal; Usanmaz, Ali; Testereci, Şenay (Elsevier BV, 1990-9)
Polymerization of allyl cyanide was carried out by radiation and chemical catalysis. Polymers obtained by γ-rays under various conditions such as in bulk and in the presence of either air or 0.1 mol% ZnCl2 were oily or solid dark-brown products with molecular weights up to 1.4 × 104. The polymers obtained by n-BuLi was a pale-yellow solid, insoluble in common organic solvents and water. No polymer was obtained with BF3O(C2H5)2. The mechanism of polymerization was shown by infra-red investigation to be diffe...
Electrochemical synthesis of crowned conducting polymers : nature of radical cations in polymerization and mechanism of conductivity
Cihaner, Atilla; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar; Department of Chemistry (2004)
Poly(dibenzo-18-crown-6) (Poly(DB18C6)) was synthesized by electrochemical oxidation of dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) using a mixture of acetonitrile and dichloromethane as solvent and tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBABF4) or tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAPF6) as supporting electrolyte. The anodic polymerization of DB18C6 was investigated using in-situ ESR and in-situ UV-VIS spectroscopic techniques. Spectroelectrochemical (SPEL) properties and thermal analysis of the resulting polymers h...
DIPOLE-MOMENTS OF STYRENE 4-VINYLPYRIDINE COPOLYMERS .1. RELATION TO THE FRACTION OF POLAR COMPONENT
YILMAZ, E; KUCUKYAVUZ, Z (Wiley, 1994-03-01)
Mean-square dipole moments for styrene/4-vinylpyridine (S4VP) random copolymers were determined at five different temperatures, 25-60-degrees-C, in 1,4-dioxane solution. The dipole moment behaviour was examined with respect to the increase in mole fraction of the polar monomer, 4-vinylpyridine (4VP), in the copolymer. The behaviour observed was different from the general behaviour of similar copolymers.
Polyacrolein with microspherical structure obtained by radiation-initiation and base catalysis
Usanmaz, Ali; Dogan, Recep Dursun (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1990-3)
Acrolein was polymerized by radiation and base catalyzed condensation. Radiation polymerization was carried in bulk form under vacuum and air atmosphere at several temperatures. The conversion reached close to 100%, and polymers were free flowing white powders up to 5% conversion at −15°C, up to 80% at higher temperatures and up to 10% in air atmosphere polymerization. Radiation polymerization from aqueous solutions of various pH and from acetone solutions gave white powder polymers with limiting conversion...
