© 1997, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.Unsteady flowfields over a stationary/flapping airfoil combination in tandem are computed using a Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes solver. The stationary leading airfoil has an experimental profile which promotes flow separation at its trailing edge. The effect of the flapping airfoil on the leading airfoil and the flow reattachment at the trailing edge are investigated by varying the amplitude and frequency of the flapping motion. A single deforming C-H type grid and overset grids are employed in the computations. Unsteady flowfields are presented in terms of Mach number contours and time histories of unsteady aerodynamic loads. The high frequency flapping motions, where the experimental data show complete flow reattachment at the trailing edge, could not be performed due to the time step limitation of the solver. However, the flow configurations studied produced a significant amount of flow entrainment at the trailing edge.

A computational study on the dynamic stall of a flapping airfoil
Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Platzer, Max F. (1998-01-01)
© 1998, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.The dynamic stall boundaries of a NACA 0012 airfoil oscillating in either the pure plunge mode or in the combined pitch and plunge mode is computed using a thin-layer Navier-Stokes solver. Unsteady flowfields are computed at the free-stream Mach number of 0.3, the Reynolds number of 1 • 106, and the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is employed. It is found that the pure plunge oscillation leads to dynamic stall as soon as the non-dimensional plun...
A viscous-inviscid interaction method for 2-D unsteady, compressible flows
Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Platzer, Max F. (1993-01-01)
© 1993 American Institute of Aeronautics and Aerodynamics, Inc. All rights reserved.A Navier-Stokes/potential flow interactive solution method suitable for the solution of steady-state and unsteady flowfields around airfoils has been developed. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved in the close proximity of an airfoil and in its wake. The inviscid flowfield surrounding the viscous flow regions is assumed to be irrotational and isentropic. In the inviscid flow region, the potential flow equations, which are...
A computational study of subsonic flows over a medium range cargo aircraft
Uygun, Murat; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı (2003-01-01)
Inviscid and viscous flows over CN-235 cargo aircraft are computed at cruise conditions and at angles of attack ranging from 0 deg to 5 deg using CFD-FASTRAN Navier-Stokes solver. Computations are performed on a Pentium III based PC with a 1Gb memory. Grid sensitivity and verification studies are performed on clean-wing and wing-nacelle configurations to determine the effects of the surface grid density, the size of the computational domain and available numerical schemes. Inviscid and viscous flows with av...
A computational study of flow separation characteristics and wake profiles behind a flapping airfoil
Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı (1999-01-01)
© 1999 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All rights reserved.Unsteady, viscous flowfields over a NACA0012 airfoil oscillated in plunge and/or pitch at various reduced frequency, amplitude and phase shift are computed. Vortical wake formations, boundary layer flows at the leading edge, the formation of leading edge vortices and their downstream convection are presented in terms of unsteady particle traces. Flow separation characteristics and thrust producing wake profiles are identifie...
A Computationally Efficient Appearance-Based Algorithm for Geospatial Object Detection
Arslan, Duygu; Alatan, Abdullah Aydın (2012-04-27)
A computationally efficient appearance-based algorithm for geospatial object detection is presented and evaluated specifically for aircraft detection from satellite imagery. An aircraft operator exploiting the edge information via gray level differences between the aircraft and its background is constructed with Haar-like polygon regions by using the shape information of the aircraft as an invariant. Fast evaluation of the aircraft operator is achieved by means of integral image. Rotated integral images are...
