In this study, a gas-kinetic BGK scheme for the solution of 3-D viscous flows on unstructured hybrid grids is presented. The second order accurate finite volume formulations are given. In order to accurately resolve the boundary layers in wall bounded viscous flows, hexahedral grid cells are employed in the boundary layer regions normal to solid surfaces while the rest of the domain is discretized by tetrahedral cells. The computation time, which is an important deficiency of gas-kinetic BGK schemes, is improved by performing computations in parallel. The parallel algorithm for unstructured hybrid grids is based on the domain decomposition. Several numerical validation cases are presented to show the accuracy and robustness of the proposed approach.

A parallel gas-kinetic Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook method for the solution of viscous flows on two-dimensional hybrid grids
Ilgaz, M.; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
In this study, a parallel implementation of gas-kinetic Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook method on two-dimensional hybrid grids is presented. Boundary layer regions in wall bounded viscous flows are discretised with quadrilateral grid cells stretched in the direction normal to the solid surface while the rest of the flow domain is discretised by triangular cells. The parallel solution algorithm on hybrid grids is based on the domain decomposition using METIS, a graph partitioning software. The flow solutions obtained ...
A subgrid stabilization finite element method for incompressible magnetohydrodynamics
Belenli, Mine A.; Kaya Merdan, Songül; Rebholz, Leo G.; Wilson, Nicholas E. (2013-07-01)
This paper studies a numerical scheme for approximating solutions of incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations that uses eddy viscosity stabilization only on the small scales of the fluid flow. This stabilization scheme for MHD equations uses a Galerkin finite element spatial discretization with Scott-Vogelius mixed finite elements and semi-implicit backward Euler temporal discretization. We prove its unconditional stability and prove how the coarse mesh can be chosen so that optimal convergence ca...
An artificial neural network model for virtual Superpave asphalt mixture design
Ozturk, Hande I.; Öztürk, Hande Işık (Informa UK Limited, 2014-02-07)
This study presents an artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the asphalt mixture volumetrics at Superpave gyration levels. The input data-set needed by the algorithm is composed of gradation of the mix, bulk specific gravity of aggregates, low- and high-performance grade of the binder, binder content of the mix and the target number of gyrations (i.e. N-ini, N-des and N-max). The proposed ANN model uses a three-layer scaled conjugate gradient back-propagation (feed-forward) network. The ANN was t...
A computational model for reinforced concrete members confined with fiber reinforced polymer lamina: Implementation and experimental validation
Mosalam, Khalid M.; Talaat, Mohamed; Binici, Barış (Elsevier BV, 2007-7)
This study presents a computational model to simulate the behavior of confined concrete in column plastic hinge zones. The model describes the distribution of confining stresses within a circular column cross-section and the hysteretic behavior of concrete under passive confinement. Of particular interest is the ability of the model to predict the maximum circumferential strains and thus estimate the limit state of the confining medium rather than relying on empirical limits such as concrete compressive str...
A modified applied element model for the simulation of plain concrete behaviour
Soysal, Berat Feyza; Arıcı, Yalın; Tuncay, Kağan (2022-08-01)
A modified applied element model to simulate the behaviour of plain concrete continuum structures including discrete cracking is proposed in this study. In the classical applied element model, Poisson effects are fully ignored. To remediate this issue, diagonal elements are introduced to include the Poisson effect, and the constitutive parameters are rigorously determined using the Cauchy-Born rule and the hyper-elastic theory. The formulation is validated for linear elastic problems and the consistency and...
