The problem of relative orbit configurations over a long time intervalsincorporating realistic dynamics, platform differences and operational constraints for safety, station keeping and inter-spacecraft communicationsis addressed. Two different approaches are developed. In the first approach, relative mean orbital mean elements are found through minimizing deviations from reference mean orbit. In second one, relative configurations are found from a reference initial condition through minimizing probability of collision between the spacecraft in the cluster which are propagated numerically through full force models.Effectiveness of the approaches is demonstrated through simulations

Long term and safe relative orbit design for heterogeneous spacecraft clusters
Yaglioglu, Burak; Tekinalp, Ozan (2021-06-01)
The problem of obtaining long term relative orbit configurations for spacecraft clusters with realistic operational considerations such as safety, station keeping and inter-spacecraft distances is addressed. Two different approaches are developed for station keeping and safety objectives. In the first approach, relative orbit configurations, or relative TLEs, are found minimizing deviations from reference mean orbit which would maximize the station-keeping objective. In second one, relative configurations a...
Numerical analysis of the effects of atmospheric parameters on space launch center safety
Yaman, İbrahim; Aksel, Mehmet Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2016)
This thesis study aims at the problem of space launch center safety which is dependent on launch vehicle conceptual design and atmospheric parameters. Selection of the concept at the initial step of the satellite launch vehicle affects the project cost and space launch center safety directly. It is also important to model properties of atmospheric conditions and conduct safety analysis. Successful mission for a launch vehicle depends on providing the total velocity requirement. In this study, launch vehicle...
Numerical Modeling of Hypersonic Air and Carbon Dioxide Flows in Thermochemical Non-Equilibrium with SU2-NEMO Solver
Çelik, Mutlu; Uğur, Ömür; Eyi, Sinan (2022-06-23)
Modeling of hypersonic aerothermodynamics in non-equilibrium flow is a challenging problem of aircraft design. Especially, prediction of atmospheric reentry and other planet’s entry heat loads are significant for aerospace vehicle design engineers. Therefore, accurate calculation of heat flux of leading edges and nose tips are the main concerns of thermal design engineers. The present study aims to simulate hypersonic entry conditions of Mars and Earth for the Mars Pathfinder experimental capsule with using...
Adaptive control of guided missiles
Tiryaki Kutluay, Kadriye; Yavrucuk, İlkay; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2011)
This thesis presents applications and an analysis of various adaptive control augmentation schemes to various baseline flight control systems of an air to ground guided missile. The missile model used in this research has aerodynamic control surfaces on its tail section. The missile is desired to make skid to turn maneuvers by following acceleration commands in the pitch and yaw axis, and by keeping zero roll attitude. First, a linear quadratic regulator baseline autopilot is designed for the control of the...
Active Vibration Control of a Smart Fin
Ülker, Fatma Demet; Nalbantoğlu, Volkan; Yong, Chen; Davıd, Zımcık; Yaman, Yavuz (2009-05-04)
This paper summarizes the design and wind tunnel experimental verifications of robust H∞ controllers for active vibration suppression of a dynamically scaled F-18 vertical smart fin. The smart fin consists of a cantilevered aluminium plate structure with surface bonded piezoelectric (Lead-Zirconate-Titanete, PZT) patches, Integrated Circuit Piezoelectric (ICP) type accelerometers and strain gauges. For H∞ controller design, the transfer function of the fin was first estimated outside the wind tunnel. Then, ...
