Cost estimation is an essential process for gaining competitive advantage in the bidding phase of every project. Besides, cost estimates are also vital for effective project control. For product development projects engineering hours is the main cost item and hence estimating engineering hours for potential product development projects is an important task.

Range estimation of construction costs using neural networks with bootstrap prediction intervals
Sönmez, Rifat (2011-08-01)
Modeling of construction costs is a challenging task, as it requires representation of complex relations between factors and project costs with sparse and noisy data. In this paper, neural networks with bootstrap prediction intervals are presented for range estimation of construction costs. In the integrated approach, neural networks are used for modeling the mapping function between the factors and costs, and bootstrap method is used to quantify the level of variability included in the estimated costs. The...
Comparison of experienced and novice cost estimator behaviors in information pull and push methods
Kiziltas, Semiha; Akinci, Burcu; Gonzalez, Cleotilde (Canadian Science Publishing, 2010-02-01)
Construction cost estimators mainly use analogy-based decision-making processes while estimating activity production rates in new bids They need to search information items that will help them in understanding the differences and similarities between the current and previously Completed projects to select appropriate production rates and make necessary adjustments to the selected production rates. The objective of the study is to understand the effect of information pull-push methods on the behaviors of cos...
Cost estimation of housing projects by functional areas
Öncül, Mustafa; Arıkan, Metin S.; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
Good conceptual cost estimates is one of the most important factors affecting the project success. Investment decisions taken and budget preparations are performed from the results of the conceptual estimates. Also, the most difficult cost estimation is the early estimates where there is very limited information. This thesis provides a model for the cost estimation of the housing projects at the conceptual stage, considering not only the total area of the construction, but also considering fractional areas,...
Supplier development in a multi-tier supply chain
Karaer, Özgen; Yalcin, Pinar (Informa UK Limited, 2019-10-16)
We examine how a buyer can use a full-control strategy and cost sharing to develop the sustainable quality capabilities of his tier-1 and tier-2 suppliers. In particular, we consider how the buyer?s development decisions and the suppliers? sustainable quality decisions are impacted by consumers? demand sensitivity to sustainable quality and the division of the supply chain margin. Two quality-demand models are studied ? the overall quality of the supply chain equals either (i) the sum of or (ii) the minimum...
Using aggregate fill rate for dynamic scheduling of multi-class systems
Kat, Bora; Avşar, Zeynep Müge (2011-01-01)
For dynamic scheduling of multi-class systems where backorder cost is incurred per unit backordered regardless of the time needed to satisfy backordered demand, the following models are considered: the cost model to minimize the sum of expected average inventory holding and backorder costs and the service model to minimize expected average inventory holding cost under an aggregate fill rate constraint. Use of aggregate fill rate constraint in the service model instead of an individual fill rate constraint f...
