This paper is concerned with the aeroelastic modeling and analysis of high aspect ratio wings with large torsional deflections with different fidelity structural models. The approach for structural modeling presented here is based on linear and nonlinear theories. The linear theories are based on the slender-straight wing and bending-torsion beam finite element formulations. The nonlinear theory is based on the nonlinear finite element model with only a torsional rotation degree of freedom to study the static aeroelastic behavior. The aerodynamic theory used for aeroelastic coupling is ESDU 95010 [1], which uses steady lifting-surface theory based on Multhopp-Richardson’s solution to provide the spanwise loading of lifting surfaces with camber and twist. Analyses are performed with three different structural models coupled with ESDU for simple plate-like wing models. The results of linear structural models are verified with MSC NASTRAN® and the nonlinear structural model results are verified with the work of Trahair [2]. Linear aeroelastic models are compared with the MSC NASTRAN® solution performed by SOL144. Significant differences in torsional deflection of tip location are observed between the linear and the nonlinear solution methodologies. The linear theory is found to be conservative for the aeroelastic analysis of high aspect ratio wings.

Aeroelastic modeling and analysis of high aspect ratio wings with different fidelity structural models
Çiçek, Gökçen.; Kayran, Altan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2019)
The focus of this study is in the area of static aeroelasticity, and it is concerned with modeling and analysis of high aspect ratio wings experiencing large torsional deflections. In this study, the effects of different fidelity structural models on static aeroelasticity are investigated. Preference of light and flexible structures due to performance and weight criteria and certification requirements make the aeroelastic analysis more and more essential for aircraft. Especially for the preliminary design p...
Failure analysis of tapered composite structures under tensile loading
Çelik, Ozan; Parnas, Kemal Levend; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2016)
A three dimensional finite element modeling approach is used to evaluate the effects of preliminary design variables on the performance of tapered composite laminates under tensile loading. Hashin failure criteria combined with a progressive failure algorithm is used for in-plane failure mechanisms and cohesive zone method is used for out-of-plane failures. The modeling approach is validated by a comparison with experimental results from literature. The validated model is used to examine various design vari...
Evolutionary topology optimization of a folding missile wing for stiffness and frequency
Ürün, Ata; Şahin, Melin; Gürses, Ercan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2023-1-25)
This thesis presents a study on the topology optimization of a folding wing structure for a cruise missile with the aim of minimizing the weight of the wing while maximizing its stiffness and/or maximizing the selected natural frequency values. The weight of the folding wing has a significant impact on the performance of the opening mechanism and the overall dynamic behavior of the missile. The Bidirectional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) method, a widely-used topology optimization technique, i...
Aeroelastic Analysis of a Flapping Blow Fly Wing
Beker, Can; Turgut, Ali Emre; ARIKAN, KUTLUK BİLGE; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda (2020-06-01)
In this study, a 3D model of the bio-inspired blowfly wing Callphere Erytrocephala is created and aeroelastic analysis is performed to calculate its aerodynamical characteristics by use of numerical methods. To perform the flapping motion, a sinusoidal input function is created. The scope of this study is to perform aeroelastic analysis by synchronizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and structural dynamic analysis models and to investigate the unsteady lift formation on the aeroelastic flapping wing fo...
Vibration characteristics of various wide flange steel beams and columns
Özel, Halil Fırat; Sarıtaş, Afşin; Tasbahjı, Tayseer (null; 2015-12-11)
Vibration characteristics of steel framed structures are affected by accurate modelling of the mass and stiffness matrices of beam and column members. In this regards, wide flange sections are the most popularly used steel sections, and calculation of axial, flexural and shear responses of these sections become critical. In this study, a mixed formulation frame finite element is developed from three-fields Hu-Washizu-Barr functional. Consistent mass matrix of the element is obtained such that determination ...
