Turkey vis-à-vis the periphery of the EU: An economic assessment

2014-12
Türel, Oktar
The aim of this paper is to review the Turkish economic experience in comparison to those countries at the periphery of the EU in the last three decades. Starting with the assessment of economic performance in major country groups over the last three mediumterm cycles of the world economy, the paper then proceeds to the examination of debt-led boom and the subsequent recession in that periphery over the 2000s. In the following section, Turkish economic development over the long run is reviewed and it is noted that, from the early 1980s to the present, Turkey had a better record of output growth vis-à-vis the Eastern & South Eastern periphery of the EU. However, Turkey has recently started to show signs of deindustrialisation and has also been faced with some adverse social consequences of privatisation and deunionisation similar to what has been observed in the periphery of the EU.

Turkey and the European Union in the Middle East: Reconciling or Competing with Each Other?
Kahraman, Sevilay (2011-01-01)
Focusing on the Turkish Middle Eastern foreign policy from the perspective of European Union (EU)-Turkey relations, this paper argues that Turkey's recent activism and attractiveness in the region is attributable to its dual reform and accession process both of which are tied to the EU's anchoring role and leverage over the country. Turkey has self-consciously taken the advantage of its domestic transformation by emulating the EU in its own neighborhood policy. However, to the current stagnation of the acce...
Turkey's Public Sector Finances and EU Perspective
Merih, Celasun (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2005-12)
In contrast to the sharpened policy preferences for sustainable public finances in the EU, Turkey’s post-1990 policy process did not feature a credible political commitment to fiscal consolidation. Turkey postponed the fundamental change in its macroeconomic and public finance strategy until the early 2000s, and undertook these reforms only after experiencing a severe financial crisis. This paper reviews the patterns of fiscal adjustment against the backdrop of the main macroeconomic trends in the 1990s and...
