From Trilemma to Dilemma: Post-Bretton Woods World
Cömert, Hasan (2016-09-10)
Many argue that the concept of the trilemma, referring that out of independent monetary policy, free capital movement and fixed exchange rate regime only two can exist at the same time, is a potent tool to explore the effectiveness of monetary policy during the Bretton Woods (BW) regime and afterward. However, under this regime, besides capital controls, regulated domestic financial markets and diversity in central bank instruments contributed to the existence of the independent monetary policy. After the c...
What Can Keynes Tell Us About Policies To Reduce Unemployment And Financial Instability in a Globalised International Economy?
Kregel, Jan (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2008-6)
Although Keynes’ General Theory has no discussion of trade and capital flows, almost all of Keynes’ writing prior to the General Theory deal with these issues. Indeed, almost all of Keynes’ writing prior to the General Theory deal with the appropriate exchange rate, the impact of external competition on domestic conditions, and the role of international investment. These contributions provided the basis for his proposals for a new international financial architecture that eventually created the Bretton Wood...
From Washington consensus to global crises
İnan, Mutlu; Yalman, Osman Galip; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2010)
This thesis focuses on the changing modes of state intervention into the economy in neoliberalism. It contends that the so called free market is neither a natural process nor an inevitable result of the harmony of interest, but the result of a deliberate political making process. The global economic crisis provided ample evidence to refute the claim that state and market are separately existing and antagonistic entities and indicates that the issue is not the market or the state, since the state in a capita...
The Evolution of central banking practices in developing countries: an effectiveness analysis on the post-crisis policy mixes of selected countries
Bozkurt, Zeynep; Cömert, Hasan; Department of Economics (2015)
Implying an expansion in the central bank mandates and policy tools, the post-crisis understanding of central banking brought a challenging task for policymakers, particularly for those of developing countries. The main purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of some selected post-crisis policy mixes. To this end, two methodologies are used: event analysis and index analysis. The former reveals that the overall design of the policy mix requires more attention than the selection of certain tools...

Güney, İbrahim Ethem; Hayfavi, Azize; Department of Financial Mathematics (2008)
Protection against inflation is an essential part of the today's financial markets, particularly in high-inflation economies. Hence, nowadays inflation indexed instruments are being increasingly popular in the world financial markets. In this thesis, we focus on pricing of the inflation-indexed bonds which are the unique inflation-indexed instruments traded in the Turkish bond market. Firstly, we review the Jarrow-Yildirim model which deals with pricing of the inflation-indexed instruments within the HJM fr...
