Austrian school of economics tends to identify ‘capitalism’ with the ‘market economy’. A celebrated member of this school once warned that “[t]he psychological problem of why people scorn and disparage capitalism and call everything they dislike ‘capitalistic’ … concerns history and must be left to the historians.” One does not have to be a specialist in history in order to acquaint himself with the magnum opus of the “Pope of history”, namely Civilization and Capitalism of Fernand Braudel. Braudel’s full-fledged historical analysis comes to the amazing point that capitalism and the market economy are ‘exact opposites.’ Capitalists have invariably bent the ‘spontaneous’ rules of the market so as to convert the ‘legible’ market data into the ‘tacit’ knowledge of the privileged few. Consequently, ‘money’ has served as a ‘power’ pivot rather than a mere medium of exchange, whereas the ‘market process’ has had to propagate wealth/power gaps apart fromconverting individual self-interests into social good. As such, our interpretation puts an entirely new face on liberal economic thought.

The European Contribution To Institutional Economics: The Approach Of G. M. Hodgson
Yılmaz, Ferudun (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2001)
Institutional economics is the leading heterodox school in economics. The other characteristic of the school is the ‘Americanness’ of its trajectory. But recent years have witnessed a transformation in the traditional boundaries of institutional economics. The school has opened its doors to European thoughts, and then the European wing of institutionalism has emerged. While European institutionalism suffered from heterogeneity of its theoretical content, it nonetheless has a potential to overcome the ‘isola...

The critical analysis of alternative local government experiences in Turkey: the case of Hozat Municipality
Bozkurt, Engin; Ersoy, Melih; Department of Urban Policy Planning and Local Governments (2011)
When analyzed within Marxist theory understandings, local governments can be considered as a body of administrative, political, social and economic relations which are defined in a certain spatial scale based on uneven development of capital accumulation. This definition removes the local governments from the context of a simple organizational-administrative problem and places them into a political context. Hence, as experience and strategies of socialist customs in our country is investigated regarding loc...
Neoliberal Transformation of the State through the Establishment of Independent Regulatory Agencies : The Case of "Tobacco and Alcohol Market Regulatory Authority" in Turkey
Şafak - Çubukçu, Öykü; Yalman, Osman Galip; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2012)
Based upon critical political economy and Marxist theory of the state, this thesis attempts to understand the neoliberal form of the capitalist state in Turkey. While doing this, it puts the establishment of independent regulatory agencies (IRAs) into the framework of the claim of de-politicization and redefined form of the separation of the political and the economic under neoliberalism. It argues that neoliberalism solved its crisis and settled through each financial crisis, as a result of which the state...
An Analysis of neoliberal sociality in the particular case of bitcoin
Göksaran, Efe Can; Mücen, Barış; Department of Sociology (2017)
This thesis analyzes the texts of Bitcoin as a particular case for Neoliberal discourse as it is developed by Austrian School of Economics. Fundamental concepts of the Austrian School of Economics are based on individual liberty. This liberty considered to be possible only in the absence of the state in their theories. This absence defined in terms of states’ non-interference to market. The texts of Bitcoin follow a similar trail of thought and conceptualize freedom on the basis of individual liberty versus...
