Many geotechnical projects involve unsaturated soils. Some of the examples of these are calculation of foundation settlement, bearing capacity on unsaturated clayey soils, slope stability of earth slopes and embankments, excavations. These and many other problems require good understanding of compression and shear behavior of unsaturated soils. However, unsaturated soil testing in the laboratory is not very straightforward because many labs do not have sophisticated equipment and knowledgeable personnel to conduct these tests. In this study, the main goal is to obtain unsaturated compression and shear strength properties by using slightly modified conventional geotechnical laboratory test setups. This study can be a step forward in promoting the widespread use of unsaturated soil testing in geotechnical engineering practice.

DONATILI TOPRAK ŞEV VE INTERACTION OF MARGINAL FILLS AND GEOGRIDS FOR REINFORCED SOIL WALLS AND SLOPES
Huvaj Sarıhan, Nejan(2017-12-31)
In design of geosynthetic reinforced soil walls and slopes, most of the design guidelines require use of granular material as backfill soil. There is lack of clarity in the design and analysis for the reinforcement of predominantly granular material which has high fines content (marginal material). In this study, large direct shear tests (width 300 mm x length 300 mm x height 300 mm) will be conducted to investigate soil – geogrid interaction mechanism in direct shear mode for granular soils having differen...
The effect of basin edge slope on the dynamic response of soil deposits
Cılız, Serap; Özkan, M. Yener; Department of Civil Engineering (2007)
The effects of basin edge slope on the dynamic response of soil deposits are assessed by using one-dimensional and two-dimensional numerical analyses. 24 basin models having trapezoidal cross section are generated to represent different geometries (basin depth, basin edge slope) and soil type. Harmonic base motions with different predominant periods (Tp) are used in the analyses. The results indicate that, for a constant basin edge slope and a constant ratio of fundamental period of site to the predominant ...
A Study of settlement of stone columns by finite element modeling through case histories
Yardım, Cemre Harzem; Ergun, Mehmet Ufuk; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Stone column technique is mostly used to reinforce soft cohesive soils. Settlements are decreased under foundations and bearing capacity is increased. This study initially focuses on a comprehensive review of literature about stone column reinforced soils. Afterwards, numerical modeling of stone column reinforced soft clays is done. Three different cases are chosen on different foundation soils mainly soft clays. Parametric studies are done to determine influence of parameters on settlement reduction ratio ...
Stabilization of expansive soils by using red mud
Çağlar, Cemre; Çokça, Erdal; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Expansive soils are generally existing in semi-arid and arid regions of the world. This type of soils expands when they absorb water and shrink when they dry out. Expansive soils are causing problems to the lightweight structures. The purpose of the study is to suggest a cost-effective alternative method for coping with these problems. The widely used traditional method is the stabilization of the soil with the chemical admixtures. In this study; waste red mud and waste fly ash were used as stabilizers. The...
A Preliminary study on construction of a high capacity tensiometer and its use in measurement of matrik suction in unsaturated soils
Köksalan, Ali Okan; Toker, Nabi Kartal; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Soil suction is one of the main state parameters that governs unsaturated soil behaviour. Tensiometers are the only type of probe that can measure soil suction directly, but only up to 90 kPa. In the past two decades, a new type of tensiometer with much greater measurement range (up to 2 MPa) has appeared in the literature. The measurement range (i.e. capacity) of a tensiometer is limited by (i) how well it is saturated, and (ii) the air entry value of its porous interface. In this study, the first high cap...
