tert-Amyl ethyl ether (TAEE) and tert-amyl alcohol (TAA), which are the attractive alternatives to methyl tert-butyl ether as octane-enhancing gasoline-blending components, are produced by the simultaneous etherification and hydration of 2-methyl-2-butene (2M2B) in a batch-reactive distillation column. It was shown that, by changing the reboiler temperature in the range of 90-124 degrees C, significant increases of the overall fractional conversion of 2M2B, reaching values of 0.99, were achieved in this system. In the presence of water, the formation of TAA was also found to take place by the reactions of 2M2B and TAEE with water. Higher selectivities were observed for TAA than for TAEE, in the presence of water. This is due to the higher adsorption equilibrium constant of water than of ethanol on an Amberlyst-15 resin catalyst. A significant increase in the fractional conversion of 2M2B to TAEE was observed in the absence of water.

Dynamic analysis of removal and selective oxidation of H2S to elemental sulfur over Cu-V and Cu-V-Mo mixed oxides in a fixed bed reactor
Yasyerli, S; Dogu, G; Ar, I; Doğu, Timur (Elsevier BV, 2004-10-01)
Selective oxidation of H2S to elemental sulfur was studied using the Cu-V and Cu-V-Mo mixed oxide catalysts with different O-2/H2S ratios between 0 and 3. High activities and high sulfur selectivities reaching 0.98 were obtained with the Cu-V catalyst. The Cu-V-Mo mixed oxide catalyst showed higher activity with a somewhat less selectivity. The Cu-V catalyst, which was originally in the form of alpha-Cu2V2O7, was converted to Cu3VS4, CuS and VOx during the initial stages of reaction. Oxidized form of the ca...
Mn-Cu and Mn-Cu-V mixed-oxide regenerable sorbents for hot gas desulfurization
Karayilan, D; Doğu, Timur; Yasyerli, S; Dogu, G (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2005-07-06)
Porous Mn-Cu and Mn-Cu-V mixed-oxide sorbents prepared by the complexation technique were tested for high-temperature removal of H2S in the presence of hydrogen gas. Sorption experiments carried out at 627 T in a fixed-bed reactor showed higher reactivity and also higher sulfur retention capacity (over 0.15 g of S/g of sorbent) for the Mn-Cu mixed oxide than for the Mn-Cu-V mixed oxide. Successive sulfidation-regeneration cycles demonstrated that the MnCu mixed oxide was also more stable than Mn-Cu-V, maint...
Enhancement of biodegradability by continuous ozonation in Acid Red-151 solutions and kinetic modeling
Gokcen, F; Ozbelge, TA (Elsevier BV, 2005-11-15)
In this work, continuous ozonation of aqueous Acid Red-151 was performed in a stirred tank reactor at neutral pH and 25 degrees C. The results show that ozonation is capable of a rapid conversion of the Acid Red-151 dye molecule to more biodegradable intermediates up to the ozonation time of 120 min at which the optimum BOD5/COD ratio is obtained. The peak BOD5/COD ratios were found to be in the range of 0.028-0.35 for the initial dye concentrations being in the range of 1000-100 mg/L, respectively.
Preparation of zeolite A tubes from amorphous aluminosilicate extrudates
Oezcan, Aysenur; Kalıpçılar, Halil (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2006-07-05)
A method is presented for the hydrothermal synthesis of binderless zeolite A bars and tubes with high purity from amorphous aluminosilicate extrudates. The solid that was separated from a hydrogel was mixed with an aqueous solution of hydroxyethyl cellulose to obtain a paste, which was extruded into bars and tubes. After calcination, amorphous bars and tubes were converted to zeolite A in the liquid phase that was separated from the hydrogel. The zeolite bars and tubes were composed of cubic zeolite A cryst...
Effect of Alkyl Derivatization on Several Properties of N-Halamine Antimicrobial Siloxane Coatings
Kocer, Hasan B.; Akdağ, Akın; Ren, Xuehong; Broughton, R. M.; Worley, S. D.; Huang, T. S. (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2008-10-01)
Variation of alkyl substitution at position 5 on the hydantoin ring of a series of N-halamine siloxane derivatives has been employed to better understand the biocidal activities of these compounds for use in preparing antimicrobial coatings. The alkyl derivatization of the hydantoin ring at its 5 position, while an essentially constant chlorine loading is maintained at the I position, has shown that there is little dependence of the antimicrobial efficacy against Escherichia coli O157:H7 on the alkyl chain ...
