Variation of alkyl substitution at position 5 on the hydantoin ring of a series of N-halamine siloxane derivatives has been employed to better understand the biocidal activities of these compounds for use in preparing antimicrobial coatings. The alkyl derivatization of the hydantoin ring at its 5 position, while an essentially constant chlorine loading is maintained at the I position, has shown that there is little dependence of the antimicrobial efficacy against Escherichia coli O157:H7 on the alkyl chain length, in contrast to reported observations for biocidal quaternary ammonium salt derivatives. The stabilities of the derivatives toward hydrolyses and ultraviolet light exposure have also been found to not be dependent upon the nature of the alkyl substituent group. These observations led to the conclusion that the 5,5-dimethyl derivative would be recommended for use, since it is the least expensive alternative.

Effect of Midsynthesis Addition of Silica to the Synthesis Medium on the Properties of MFI-Type Zeolite Membranes
Soydas, Belma; Kalıpçılar, Halil; Culfaz, Ali (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2010-06-02)
Thin zeolite membranes of MFI type were prepared on alpha-Al2O3 supports by midsynthesis addition of silica in a recirculating flow system at 95 degrees C The synthesis was started with the batch composition of 80SiO(2): 30TPAOH:1500H(2)O which was changed to 80SiO(2)center dot 9TPAOH:1500H(2)O by addition of silica Mkt 24, 48, or 72 h Compared to synthesis at constant composition. it is possible to affect the rates of nucleation and crystal growth to obtain membranes with better quality by changing the ove...
Effect of fluorine substituted benzothiadiazole on electro-optical properties of donor-acceptor-donor type monomers and their polymers
Çakal, Deniz; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar (Elsevier BV, 2020-11-01)
A series of trimeric monomers bearing thiophene donor units and fluorinated analogues of benzothiadiazole acceptor units was synthesized via donor-acceptor-donor approach and polymerized electrochemically in order to investigate the effect of fluorine atom on electro-optical properties of both monomers and their corresponding polymers. All monomers exhibited solvatochromic and fluorescent properties. The introduction of fluorine atom into the conjugated backbone increased the oxidation potentials. Upon movi...
Effects of pH, Initiator, Scavenger, and Surfactant on the Ozonation Mechanism of an Azo Dye (Acid Red-151) in a Batch Reactor
Oezbelge, Tuelay A.; Erol, Funda (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
In this study, an initiator (Fe2+) and a scavenger (CO32(-)) were used at different concentrations in a batch reactor to investigate the reaction mechanism of ozonation of a model azo dye, namely Acid Red-151 (AR-151). Also, the effect of a nonionic surfactant known as a major pollutant in many industrial wastewaters, namely polyethylene glycol (PEG), was observed on the degradation rate of AR-151. The experimental parameters and their ranges were: pH (2.5-10), initiator (0.8-50mg/L of Fe2+), surfactant (10...
Removal of phenolic compounds from rubber-textile wastewaters by physico-chemical methods
Ozbelge, TA; Ozbelge, OH; Baskaya, SZ (Elsevier BV, 2002-09-01)
Removal of phenolic compounds from rubber-textile wastewaters (RTWWs) by physico-chemical process was investigated by using four different types of coagulants (Al-2(SO4)(3), Fe-2(SO4)(3), FeSO4, FeCl3) with or without lime (Ca(OH)(2)) addition, in jar-test experiments. The RTWWs of the present tire-cord fabric plant may contain seven different types of dipping solutions (DSs), which provide an adhesive property to the fabric. The optimum results were obtained by using 50% FeCl3 solution and lime at various ...
Effect of thermal neutron irradiation on the elastic constants of tourmaline
Özkan, H. (Informa UK Limited, 1987-2)
The effect of thermal neutron irradiation due to the B10(n, α)Li7 reaction on the elastic wave velocities and the elastic moduli of tourmaline crystals has been studied. Oriented tourmaline samples have been irradiated with thermal neutrons to 7.6 × 1018n/cm2 and the elastic wave velocities determined by ultrasonic measurements. The elastic wave velocities are not affected by thermal neutron irradiation below 8 × 10l7n/cm2, effects starting to appear at approximately 1 × l018n/cm2 with more important decrea...
