It is well known that general relativity in three spacetime dimensions (3D) has no well-defined Newtonian limit. Recently, a static solution mimicking the behavior of the expected Newtonian potential has been found by studying the classical double copy of a point charge in gauge theory [M. Carrillo Gonzlez, B. Melcher, K. Ratliff, S. Watson, and C. D. White, J. High Energy Phys. 07 (2019) 167.]. This is the first example where the vacuum solution in the gauge theory leads to a nonvacuum solution on the gravity side. The resulting energy-momentum tensor was attributed to a free scalar ghost field; however, alternatively, the source can be seen as one resulting from a spacelike perfect fluid. In this paper, we first give an alternative derivation of the solution where there is no need to perform a generalized gauge transformation to obtain a quadratic Lagrangian without propagating ghost fields. Then, we present a stationary version of the solution and show that the scalar field interpretation of the source does not survive in this case, leaving the spacelike fluid as the only possibility. We give the gauge theory single copy of our solution and comment on the implications of our results on the validity of the classical double copy in 3D. The effect of the cosmological constant is also discussed.

Neutrino oscillations induced by spacetime torsion
Adak, M; Dereli, T; Ryder, LH (IOP Publishing, 2001-04-21)
The gravitational neutrino oscillation problem is studied by considering the Dirac Hamiltonian in a Riemann-Cartan spacetime and calculating the dynamical phase. Torsion contributions which depend on the spin direction of the mass eigenstates are found. These effects are of the order of Planck scales.
New approach to conserved charges of generic gravity in AdS spacetimes
Altas, Emel; Tekin, Bayram (American Physical Society (APS), 2019-02-12)
Starting from a divergence-free rank-4 tensor of which the trace is the cosmological Einstein tensor, we give a construction of conserved charges in Einstein's gravity and its higher derivative extensions for asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. The current yielding the charge is explicitly gauge invariant, and the charge expression involves the linearized Riemann tensor at the boundary. Hence, to compute the mass and angular momenta in these spacetimes, one just needs to compute the linearized Riemann...
Event horizon detecting invariants
Tavlayan, Aydın; Tekin, Bayram (American Physical Society (APS), 2020-04-14)
Some judiciously chosen local curvature scalars can be used to invariantly characterize event horizons of black holes inD > 3 dimensions, but they fail for the three dimensional Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole since all curvature invariants are constant. Here we provide an invariant characterization of the event horizon of the BTZ black hole using the curvature invariants of codimension one hypersurfaces instead of the full spacetime. Our method is also applicable to black holes in generic dimen...
Topologically massive gravity as a Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator
Sarıoğlu, Bahtiyar Özgür; Tekin, Bayram (IOP Publishing, 2006-12-21)
We give a detailed account of the free- field spectrum and the Newtonian limit of the linearized ` massive' ( Pauli -Fierz), 'topologically massive' ( Einstein Hilbert - Chern - Simons) gravity in 2 + 1 dimensions about a Minkowski spacetime. For a certain ratio of the parameters, the linearized free theory is Jordan diagonalizable and reduces to a degenerate ` Pais - Uhlenbeck' oscillator which, despite being a higher derivative theory, is ghost free.
Gravitational interactions in 2+1 dimensions
Dereli, Tekin; Tucker, Robin W. (IOP Publishing, 1988-7-1)
Modifications to Einstein's vacuum equations for gravitation in 2+1 dimensions are studied. The addition of the Schouten-Eisenhart 2-forms to the field equations admits gravitational wave solutions although no non-trivial static rotationally symmetric metrics exist. Higher-order derivative models for the metric are discussed together with a 2+1 Brans-Dicke theory. The latter is solved for a static metric exhibiting singularities.
