Many new-generation database applications demand intelligent information management necessitating efficient interactions between database gr. knowledge bases and the users. In this study we discuss evaluation of imprecise queries in an intelligent object-oriented database environment, IFOOD. A flexible query evaluation mechanism, capable of handling different data types including complex and imprecise data and knowledge is presented and key language issues are addressed.

Handling complex and uncertain information in the ExIFO and NF2 data models
Yazıcı, Adnan; Petry, FE (1999-12-01)
Trends in databases leading to complex objects present opportunities for representing imprecision and uncertainty that were difficult to integrate cohesively in simpler database models. In fact, one can begin at the conceptual level with a model that allows uncertainty assumptions and then transform those assumptions into a logical model having the necessary semantic foundations upon which to base a meaningful query language. Here we provide such a constructive approach beginning with the ExIFO model for ex...
Improving the performance of Hadoop/Hive by sharing scan and computation tasks
Özal, Serkan; Toroslu, İsmail Hakkı; Doğaç, Asuman; Department of Computer Engineering (2013)
MapReduce is a popular model of executing time-consuming analytical queries as a batch of tasks on large scale data. During simultaneous execution of multiple queries, many oppor- tunities can arise for sharing scan and/or computation tasks. Executing common tasks only once can reduce the total execution time of all queries remarkably. Therefore, we propose to use Multiple Query Optimization (MQO) techniques to improve the overall performance of Hadoop Hive, an open source SQL-based distributed warehouse sy...
Flexible Content Extraction and Querying for Videos
Demir, Utku; KOYUNCU, Murat; Yazıcı, Adnan; Yilmaz, Turgay; SERT, MUSTAFA (2011-10-28)
In this study, a multimedia database system which includes a semantic content extractor, a high-dimensional index structure and an intelligent fuzzy object-oriented database component is proposed. The proposed system is realized by following a component-oriented approach. It supports different flexible query capabilities for the requirements of video users, which is the main focus of this paper. The query performance of the system (including automatic semantic content extraction) is tested and analyzed in t...
Interactive visual user interfaces: A survey
Murtagh, F; Taşkaya Temizel, Tuğba; Contreras, P; Mothe, J; Englmeier, K (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2003-06-01)
Following a short survey of input data types on which to construct interactive visual user interfaces, we report on a new and recent implementation taking concept hierarchies as input data. The visual user interfaces express domain ontologies which are based on these concept hierarchies. We detail a web-based implementation, and show examples of usage. An appendix surveys related systems, many of them commercial.
A fuzzy database and knowledge base environment for intelligent retrieval
Koyuncu, M; Yazıcı, Adnan (2001-07-28)
We discuss an environment that permits flexible modeling and fuzzy querying of complex data and knowledge including uncertainty. With such an environment, one can have intelligent retrieval of information from knowledge- intensive applications. In this study, we specifically describe the details (the model, inference mechanism, etc,) of the fuzzy knowledge base system (coupled with a fuzzy object-oriented database system, namely FOOD) of this environment.
