The activity of fluidized bed particles towards the volatile matter of a bituminous coal was analysed by measurement of tar yield and the direct measurement of CO2 concentration in the exhaust gas from the devolatilization of bituminous coal particles in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed reactor. In a third approach, thermogravimetric analysis (t.g.a.) of the fluidizing particles was performed, indicating that calcium-containing particles exhibited the largest weight loss. In a fourth approach, a mass spectrometer was connected to the t.g.a. instrument to identify the gases responsible for the weight loss. The results from the third and fourth approaches are presented in this paper. T.g.a. weight loss profiles of calcium-containing solids under certain conditions were very complex. Mass spectrometric analysis of the effluent gases from particles pre-exposed to the volatile matter of a bituminous coal in a fluidized bed showed that CaSO4 may decompose under reducing conditions due to the presence of combustion intermediates such as CO and H-2, and the presence of oxygen may complete the sulfation reaction. Evaluation of an improved code for the performance of AFBCs
Selçuk, Nevin; Oymak, O (1997-03-01)
In a previously developed system model, bed and freeboard models were coupled for the continuous combustion of lignite particles of widely varied size distributions, burning in their own ash in a fluidised combustor. This was modified to incorporate a) a procedure for faster computation of particle-size distributions (PSDs) without any sacrifice of accuracy; b) an energy balance on char particles, for determining temperature variation with particle size; and c) assumption of plug flow for the interstitial g...
Influence of soot on radiative heat transfer in bubbling fluidized bed combustors
Yaşar, Mehmet Soner; Selçuk, Nevin; Külah, Görkem (2021-08-01)
The effect of soot particles and aggregates on radiative heat transfer in bubbling fluidized bed combustors is investigated. For this purpose, a soot radiative property model based on Rayleigh scattering theory is coupled with in-house developed 1-D gray and spectral radiation codes and a 3-D spectral radiation code based on method of lines solution of discrete ordinates method for the application of (i) a 1-D slab problem involving combustion gases and soot and (ii) freeboard of a 0.3 MWt atmospheric bubbl...
Assessment of a model with char attrition for a bubbling atmospheric fluidized-bed combustor
Gogebakan, Y; Selçuk, Nevin (2004-05-01)
A comprehensive model, previously developed and tested for prediction of behavior of continuous fluidized-bed combustors, is extended to incorporate char attrition and is applied to the simulation of a 0.3 MegaWatt (MW) atmospheric bubbling fluidized-bed combustor burning lignites with high Volatile Matter/Fixed Carbon (VM/FC) ratios in their own ashes. The effect of this incorporation is assessed by comparing the predictions of the model with and without attrition with measurements. Favorable comparisons o...
PREDICTION OF BED MATERIAL ACTIVITY FROM CHANGES IN CARBON-DIOXIDE CONCENTRATION FOLLOWING COAL PARTICLE INJECTION IN THE FLUIDIZED-BED REACTOR
VURAL, H (Elsevier BV, 1994-01-01)
An electrically heated laboratory scale fluidized bed reactor was used for measurement of carbon dioxide concentrations from the devolatilization of bituminous coal under conditions pertinent to a large scale atmospheric pressure fluidized bed combustor (AFBC). Feeding a few particles into the bed, which contained 1 or 2 g of char, produced an increase in CO2 concentration. The quantity of CO2 released from the fluidized bed was found to be a function of fluidizing solid material, as well as the bed tempera...
Influence of bag filter ash to spectral thermal radiation in fluidized bed combustors Co-Fired with biomass
Yaşar, Mehmet Soner; Selçuk, Nevin; Külah, Görkem (2021-09-01)
Influence of fine particles collected in bag filter on spectral thermal radiation is investigated in the freeboard of a 0.3 MWt atmospheric bubbling fluidized bed combustion test rig where lignite, lignite/olive residue, and lignite/hazelnut shell blends are fired with limestone addition. For this purpose, a 3-D radiation code based on method of lines solution of discrete ordinates method coupled with banded one gas spectral line-based weighted sum of gray gases for spectral gas properties, Mie theory for s...
