Reusing gold-mine tailings in cement mortars: Mechanical properties and socio-economic developments for the Lefke-Xeros area of Cyprus

Ince, Ceren
Unexpected closure of the operations at an abandoned mine in the Lefke-Xeros area of Cyprus has resulted in an enormous environmental degradation and health hazards in the locality. In order to explore the possible ways for the rehabilitation of the abandoned mine site as well as to suggest alternative waste management approaches, gold mine tailings of Lefke-Xeros area are incorporated in cement mortars in this paper. Experimental measures such as compressive strength, water penetration depth, porosity, resistance to freeze/thaw cycling and carbonation depth of cement mortars incorporating gold tailings, carried out over the period of 9 months, have shown to be improved significantly. The release of heavy metals of cement mixtures incorporating gold tailings were substantially lower than the limits of US Code of Regulations. Cost effectiveness analysis also validated the efficient use of gold tailings both as cement and sand replacement in these mortars. Particularly, it is shown in the paper that the use of 30% gold tailings as a binder replacement resulted in a 22% decrease in the CO2 emissions arises from cement manufacturing. It must be emphasized that the use of gold tailings does not only result in a considerable reduction in CO2 emissions originates from cement production but also plays a crucial role in sustaining a healthy ecosystem of the immediate environment after the closure of mine sites and helps maintaining the economic growth of the locality.

The effects of marble wastes on soil properties and hazelnut yield
TOZSİN, Gülşen; ÖZTAŞ, Taşkın; Arol, Ali İhsan; KALKAN, Ekrem; Duyar, Omur (Elsevier BV, 2014-10-15)
Wastes generated in the dimension stone industry have become an environmental concern in Turkey which is one of the leading dimension stone (mostly marble and travertine) producers in the world. Use of such wastes rich in CaCO3 for the remediation of acidic and calcium deficient soils might be an environmentally sound way to reduce the amount of wastes to be disposed. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of marble quarry and cutting wastes on the soil properties and Tombul hazelnut culti...
Institutional framework for urban development with co-benefits: the Indian experience
Doll, Christopher N. H.; Dreyfus, Magali; Ahmad, Sohail; Balaban, Osman (Elsevier BV, 2013-11-01)
The co-benefits approach has been proposed as a means for mainstreaming environmental concerns into urban development, especially in developing countries. This paper reviews the Indian situation setting out the urban-environmental challenge. National policies related to urban development, climate change and specific sectors are examined and then, with the aid of cases, analysed to understand the strengths and weaknesses of generating co-benefits in the world's second most populous country.
Minimization of water and chemical use in a cotton/polyester fabric dyeing textile mill

Water, wastewater and chemical minimization studies were carried out in a textile mill employing cotton-polyester weaving-knitting and subsequently dyeing-finishing. Detailed on-site investigations and analysis on production processes were performed according to Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control principles. Specific consumptions in wet processes were calculated by mass balance analyses. Water/wastewater samples were collected and various parameters were analyzed. Specific wastewater generations an...
Sustainable textile production: a case study from a woven fabric manufacturing mill in Turkey
Alkaya, Emrah; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (Elsevier BV, 2014-02-15)
The aim of this research was to investigate the applicability of different sustainable production measures and demonstrate environmental and economical benefits in a woven fabric manufacturing mill in Bursa, Turkey. As a result of an Environmental Performance Evaluation (EPE) evaluation, five sustainable production applications were proposed and implemented to decrease water consumption, wastewater generation, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and salt (NaCl) consumption in the company. As a resu...
Utilisation of waste marble dust for improved durability and cost efficiency of pozzolanic concrete
Ince, Ceren; Hamza, Ali; Derogar, Shahram; Ball, Richard James (Elsevier BV, 2020-10-01)
This study demonstrates that the incorporation of waste marble dust to pozzolanic concrete improves the long-term mechanical properties and durability characteristics. A comprehensive study utilising specimens containing a cement and silica fume binder were manufactured with incremental levels of marble dust fine aggregate. Important physical properties including compressive strength, water penetration depth, porosity, resistance to sulphate attack and resistance to freeze/thaw cycling were evaluated over a...
