This study covers various aspects of powertrain systems for battery electric vehicles with main focus on front axes driven vehicles. A brief comparison of conventional and electrical powertrain regarding the driveability issues is presented in order to indicate the performance benefits of electrical machines into the vehicle applications. System level differences between internal combustion engine and electrical machine are given. As the most commonly used electrical machine types, a comparison of induction machine and interior permanent magnet synchronous machine is given. Main features of motor drives in industrial and electric vehicle applications are compared and system integration issues are discussed As case study, electric version of FIAT New Doblo is presented including the test results on acceleration performance. Impact of vehicle weight on traction power demand is analysed both analytically and experimentally. Important research and development fields for motor drives in electric vehicles are highlighted considering the cost reduction, efficiency and reliability issues in automotive.

Modeling and optimization of hybrid electric vehicles
Özden, Burak Şamil; Ünlüsoy, Yavuz Samim; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2013)
The main goal of this thesis study is the optimization of the basic design parameters of hybrid electric vehicle drivetrain components to minimize fuel consumption and emission objectives, together with constraints derived from performance requirements. In order to generate a user friendly and flexible platform to model, select drivetrain components, simulate performance, and optimize parameters of series and parallel hybrid electric vehicles, a MATLAB based graphical user interface is designed. A basic siz...
An Evaluation of Building Integrated Wind Energy
Pekeriçli, Mehmet Koray; Tanyer, Ali Murat (null; 2017-06-07)
Electric, hybrid, and petrol vehicles utilize energy saving regenerative brakes to save energy• These systems generally use the same device for both locomotion and power generation (braking)• We can distribute many small aerofoils across the building façade to provide both ventilation and power generation as needed
Assessment of Impacts of Electric Vehicles on LV Distribution Networks in Turkey
TEMIZ, Armagan; Güven, Ali Nezih (2016-04-08)
This study proposes a methodology to analyze the impacts of Electric Vehicles (EVs) on Low Voltage (LV) distribution networks based on probabilistic models developed for the charging process of EVs. In addition to the battery charging characteristics, Gaussian distribution function for EV plug-in times and Weibull distribution function for daily travel times are utilized in simulations. Monte Carlo based load flow simulations are performed in order to evaluate the response of the LV networks to various EV a...
An improved energy requirement prediction for queueing applications of electric vehicles based on parameter estimation
Sağlam, Berkay; Göl, Murat; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2022-8)
The use of electric vehicles has increased in recent years. Although they have many benefits to the environment such as reduced carbon emissions, charging of vehicles brings some new challenges for power systems such as overloading, reliability problems, etc. Charging of electric vehicles should be managed to overcome these problems. Queueing strategies are one of the management methods. These strategies are applied to obtain a feasible operation that depends on the decisions made considering system propert...
Sizing of a series hybrid electric vehicle
Arıkan, Fuat Remzican; Ertan, Hulusi Bülent; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2019)
The main aim of this work is to investigate whether a cost competitive hybrid electric vehicle can be designed and under what conditions this can be achieved. For this purpose, first a light commercial vehicle is considered. Its model is developed in ADVISOR environment in Matlab and verified by comparing with the official tests of the vehicle, acceleration and NEDC fuel consumption, namely. Following that, electrical components are searched for rating, dimension, weight and cost through the literature and ...
