Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) scraps were recovered as a filler material for low-density polyethylene (LDPE) after they were degraded by Co-60 gamma-rays under atmospheric conditions to make small-size powder. The powder PTFE, which was called secondary PTFE (2 degrees-PTFE), was melt mixed with LDPE and then extruded to obtain 200 mu m films. The mechanical and thermal properties and also the morphology of the fractured surface of these 2 degrees-PTFE-filled LDPE were studied. It was found that the addition of 2 degrees-PTFE resulted in thermofilm property of LDPE but it slightly decreased the thermal oxidative temperature of LDPE. The tensile strength and ultimate elongation of LDPE were found to decrease with the addition of 2 degrees-PTFE. However, when it is compared to the addition of virgin PTFE into LDPE, 2 degrees-PTFE shows better mechanical properties due to the presence of oxy groups which are capable of interacting with the main matrix. A further improvement in mechanical properties was achieved by silane coupling agent treatment of 2 degrees-PTFE. Silane coupling agents were found to enhance the interfacial adhesion between 2 degrees-PTFE and LDPE. The study on the fractured surfaces by scanning electron microscope revealed this adhesion between these two polymers. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 74: 866-876, 1999.

ANIONIC SYNTHESIS OF POLY(METHYLMETHACRYLATE)-POLY(4-VINYLPYRIDINE) DIBLOCK COPOLYMERS IN THE PRESENCE OF LICL
NUGAY, N; HOSOTTE, C; NUGAY, T; RIESS, G (Elsevier BV, 1994-10-01)
Poly(methylmethacrylate)-poly(4-vinylpyridine) diblock copolymers were synthesized by sequential anionic polymerization. 1,1-diphenyl-3-methylpentyllithium was used as initiator and LiCl was added to the system as ligand to modify both initiator and active chain end in order to avoid side reactions. The products were characterized by H-1-NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry. The block copolymers show narrow molecular weight distribution and microphase separat...
SPECTRAL CHARACTERIZATION AND THERMAL-BEHAVIOR OF CROSS-LINKED POLY(HYDROXYETHYLMETHACRYLATE) BEADS PREPARED BY SUSPENSION POLYMERIZATION
KIREMITCI, M; CUKUROVA, H; Özkar, Saim (Wiley, 1993-01-01)
Crosslinked poly(hydroxyethylmethacrylate) [poly(HEMA)] beads were prepared by the suspension copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate monomer with ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) in aqueous media which contained only magnesium oxide (MgO) as a suspension stabilizer and also salting-out agent. The procedure gives spherical particles with narrow size distribution. The reaction mechanism, composition and structure of poly(HEMA) beads were studied by solid-state C-13 CP/MAS NMR, FTIR, ESCA, and ele...
Bioapplications of poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers in nanomedicine
Pourianazar, Negar Taghavi; Mutlu, Pelin; Gündüz, Ufuk (2014-03-13)
Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers are a novel class of spherical, well-designed branching polymers with interior cavities and abundant terminal groups on the surface which can form stable complexes with drugs, plasmid DNA, oligonucleotides, and antibodies. AmineaEuroterminated PAMAM dendrimers are able to solubilize different families of hydrophobic drugs, but the cationic charges on dendrimer surface may disturb the cell membrane. Therefore, surface modification by PEGylation, acetylation, glycosylation,...
gamma-irradiated poly(tetrafluoroethylene) particle-filled low-density polyethylene. II. UV stability of LDPE in the presence of 2 degrees-PTFE powder and silane coupling agents
Akinay, AE; Tincer, T (Wiley, 1999-10-24)
Ultraviolet (UV) stability of gamma-irradiated poly(tetrafluoroethylene), 2 degrees-PTFE, powder-filled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was studied in this work. The mechanical and thermal properties of 2 degrees-PTFE powder-filled LDPE were discussed in our previous work (Akinay and Tincer, 1999). It already has been shown that silane coupling agents (SCAs) result in improvements in mechanical properties. The UV stability of these samples was followed by a comparision between strain at break measured after...
Electrochemical polymerization of trihaloalkane monomers to form branched c-backbone polymers
Nur, Yusuf; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Hacaloğlu, Jale; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2011)
Polycarbynes ( poly(hydridocarbyne), poly(methylcarbyne) and poly(phenylcarbyne) ) are a class of network polymers which are primarily composed of tetrahedrally hybridizated carbon atoms which have hydrogen, methyl or phenyl pendant group linked via three carbon-carbon single bonds to form a three dimensional network of fixed rings. This backbone o ers unusual properties on the polymer including thermal decomposition to form diamond and diamondlike carbon. In this thesis, polycarbynes were synthesized by el...
