Caner, Ferhun Cem
Mengi, Yalcin
In this parametric study, the effects of soil-structure interaction on the earthquake response of structures is demonstrated by including various types of supporting media and seismic environments in the analysis of a very simple structure representing residential building. The effect of the type of control point selected is also addressed. The analyses are performed in frequency space by employing the substructure method and non-dimensional variables. The transformation from the frequency to time space is performed by FFT algorithm. The results are presented in the form of plots of maximum lateral (or torsional) acceleration against a reference period for various parameters appearing in the analyses.

Performance of seismic-isolated bridges in relation to near-fault ground-motion and isolator characteristics
Dicleli, Murat (SAGE Publications, 2006-11-01)
This paper investigates the performance of seismic-Isolated bridges (SIBs) subjected to near-fault (NF) earthquakes with forward rupture directivity effect (FRDE) in relation to the isolator, substructure, and NF earthquake properties, and examines some critical design clauses in AASHTO's Guide Specifications for Seismic Isolation Design. It is found that the SIB response is a function of the number of velocity pulses, magnitude of the NF ground motion, and distance from the fault. Particularly, a reasonabl...
Assessment of nonlinear static (pushover) analysis procedures using field experience
Dilsiz, Abdullah; Gülkan, Polat; Yakut, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2013)
Recently, many nonlinear analysis procedures have been proposed for earthquake response determination of the structures. Although, the nonlinear response history analysis (NRHA) is accepted as the most accurate source of information for nonlinear seismic response, nonlinear static procedures (NSP) may also provide reasonable estimates of seismic demand and inelastic behavior. However, all proposed NSPs have limitations, due to the certain approximations and simplifications, such as invariable load pattern a...
Effect of isolator and ground motion characteristics on the performance of seismic-isolated bridges
Dicleli, Murat (Wiley, 2006-02-01)
This paper presents the effect of isolator and substructure properties as well as the frequency characteristics and intensity of the ground motion on the performance of seismic-isolated bridges (SIBs) and examines some critical design clauses in the AASHTO Guide Specification for Seismic Isolation Design. For this purpose, a parametric study, involving more than 800 non-linear time history analyses of simplified structural models representative of typical SIBs, is conducted. The results from the parametric ...
Seismic Response Analysis and Optimum Design Of A Concave Ball Support İsolated System for A Three Story Concrete Structure
Kaplan, Halit; Dölen, Melik (2003-10-10)
This paper investigates the seismic response and optimum design of a base isolation system for earthquake protection of structures. The system incorporates spherical supports for the base, a specially designed spring-cam system to keep the base rigidly supported under normal conditions and to allow it to move for the duration of the earthquake under the constraint of a spring with optimized stiffness characteristics. A single degree of freedom structure was considered to investigate the feasibility of the c...
Analysis Methods for the Investigation of the Seismic Response of Concrete Dams
Aldemir, Alper; Yilmazturk, Sema Melek; Yucel, Ali Riza; Binici, Barış; Arıcı, Yalın; Akman, Altug (2015-01-01)
The consideratiOn of the dam-foundation-reservoir interaction is extremely important for estimating the seismic response of concrete gravity dams. Moreover, nonlinear analysis may be required for determining the possible risk associated with dams. In order to address these issues, DSI recently published the "Guidelines for Seismic Design of Concrete Dams". Authors who have contributed to the preparation of this document provide a perspective on the seismic safety/design of concrete dams and structural analy...
