Recent Earthquakes have shown that, to reduce the life and property loss, it is necessary to have good building codes and to have the provisions of these codes enforced. This paper discusses the issues related to enforcement of Building Codes and, using Canadian experience, provides a road map for an effective system to enforce the provisions of the Building Codes.

A Formal representation of building codes to facilitate BIM-based automated code-checking
Akbaş, Yiğit Semih; Akçamete Güngör, Aslı; Department of Civil Engineering (2019)
Building designs need to be checked against related building codes and regulations. This control is mainly a manual process done by government professionals. Therefore, it takes enormous amount of time and may lead to many errors. A more sophisticated system is required for checking building codes and regulations. Automated code-checking systems and tools can be used to aid this process with the help of Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools and these systems are started to be used for efficient design c...
Strengthening of brick infilled rc frames with cfrp reinforcement-general principles
Akın, Emre; Özcebe, Güney; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
There is an excessive demand for the rehabilitation of frame type reinforced concrete (RC) buildings which do not satisfy current earthquake code provisions. Therefore, it is imperative to develop user-friendly seismic strengthening methodologies which do not necessitate the evacuation of building during rehabilitation period. In this study, it was aimed to strengthen the brick infill walls by means of diagonal Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) fabrics and to integrate them with the existing structural...
Simple survey procedures for seismic risk assessment in urban building stocks
Sucuoğlu, Haluk (2003-05-13)
Cities under significant seismic risk contain a large number of vulnerable buildings. An effective risk assessment measure is to identify the most vulnerable buildings, which may undergo severe damage in a future earthquake. A two-level risk assessment procedure is proposed here. The first level is based on recording building parameters from the street side. In the second level, these are extended by structural parameters measured by entering the ground story. Statistical correlations have been obtained by ...
A comparative assessment of an existing reinforced concrete building by using different seismic rehabilitation codes and procedures
Öztürk, İsmail; Sucuoğlu, Haluk; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
Lateral load carrying capacities of reinforced concrete structures which are designed by considering only gravity loads or according to outdated earthquake codes can be insufficient. The most important problem for these buildings is the limited ductility of the frame elements. How to evaluate the performance of an existing structure and to what level to strengthen it had been major concerns for structural engineers. Recent earthquakes which occurred in the Marmara Region in the last decade have increased th...
IDENTIFICATION OF GAPS IN THE INTERFACE BETWEEN SPATIAL PLANNING DECISIONS AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE OF BUILT-UP AREAS IN THE SCOPE OF SEISMIC RESILIENT CITIES: CASE OF KAHRAMANMARAŞ
Çepni, Elif Zeynep; Şenol Balaban, Meltem; Askan Gündoğan, Ayşegül; Department of Earthquake Studies (2023-1)
During the urbanization and construction processes in Türkiye, earthquakes caused by tectonic reasons have resulted in great damage. Damage to life and properties as a result of earthquakes lead to great material and moral losses. Particularly in our country where earthquakes are frequently experienced, development decisions on unsuitable grounds together with construction processes without engineering standards and designs had led today’s most populous cities to be vulnerable to earthquakes which is the c...
