Radiation grafting of various water-soluble monomers on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene powder: Part I. Grafting conditions and grafting yield

Tincer, T
Monomers of some water-soluble polymers; acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylamide, N, N-dimethyl acrylamide and 1-vinyl-2 pyrrolidone, were grafted on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) powders by a direct grafting method in an aqueous medium in air. Inhibition of homopolymerisation was achieved by adding various concentrations of Fe2+ or Cu2+ ions. It was found that the degree of grafting increases linearly with dose till a gelation state is reached, and varies between 40 and 12% depending on the monomer. Four million molecular weight UHMWPE gave a higher per cent grafting than a 6 million counterpart for the monomers used, with the exception of acrylic acid monomer grafting.

Condensation reactions such as Guerbet and aldol are important since they allow for C-C bond formation and give higher molecular weight oxygenates. An initial study identified Pd-supported on hydrotalcite as an active catalyst for the, transformation, although this catalyst showed extensive undesirable decarbonylation. A catalyst containing Pd and Cu in a 3:1 ratio dramatically decreased decarbonylation, while preserving the high catalytic rates seen with Pd-based catalysts. A combination of XRD, EXAFS, TEM...

Na-23 double-rotation NMR (DOR) provides site-specific structural and dynamical information on guest-host interactions within sodium zeolite Y pores. Quantitative adsorption of H2O, PMe3, and Mo(CO)6 guests affects both the positions and line shapes of the N-23 resonances from specific extraframework Na+ sites. The evolution of the Na-23 DOR spectra with the progressive introduction of guest molecules allows one to probe direct ''solvation'' effects involving the Na+ cations in the larger supercages, as wel...
Mutual coupling of printed elements on a cylindrically layered structure using closed-form Green's functions
Acar, R. C.; Dural, G. (EMW Publishing, 2008-01-01)
A hybrid method to calculate mutual coupling of electric or magnetic current elements on a cylindrically layered structure using closed-form Green's functions is presented. When rho = rho' and phi is not very close to phi', closed-form Green's functions are employed in the calculation of MoM matrix entries. When both rho = rho' and phi = phi', series representation of the spectral domain Green's functions do not converge, therefore closed-form Green's functions can not be employed. In that case MoM matrix e...
ESR dating of calcrete nodules from Bala, Ankara (Turkey): Preliminary results

The age of two calcrete nodules (C1 and C2) from the Bala section in the region of Ankara, Turkey, is determined by the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) method. Three radiation-induced ESR signals at g=2.0056 (A signal), g=2.0006 (C signal) and g=2.0038 (broad signal, BL) were observed. The broad signal (BL) intensity was used as a dating signal. The properties of this dating signal are described in this manuscript. The calcrete nodules were irradiated with a Co-60 gamma source and measured with an ESR spectro...
Degradation of poly(bisphenol-a-epichlorohydrin) by gamma irradiation
Ozdemir, Tonguc; Usanmaz, Ali (Elsevier BV, 2008-06-01)
In this study, radiation stability of poly(bisphenol-a-epichloroliydrin) (PBEH) was studied via gamma irradiations at two different dose rates of 1540 and 82.8 Gy/h, in order to understand the possible use of PBEH in radioactive waste management as a solidifying agent. The total dose of irradiation was up to 2150kGy. Degradation nature was tested by studying the changes in mechanical and thermal properties with the change of dose rate and total dose of irradiation. Tensile strength at yield was increased fi...
