Efficient and broadband guided wave one-way mode-order conversion with theoretical and numerical analysis

In this article, an efficient method of asymmetric conversion of guided modes is investigated. From a basic excitation consisting of (mainly) the lowest-order mode of the input multimode strip waveguide, we achieve a conversion efficiency of similar to 60% on average, in the forward propagation case, while the backward propagation is suppressed below 10%. The analytical formulation is based on electromagnetic wave theory with orthogonality relations. Affirmative results between the theoretical and numerical findings based on time and frequency domain analysis are observed. The results of this study will increase the ease of implementing an optical isolator if the breaking time-reversal symmetry could be achieved by nonlinear optics or magneto-optic configurations. Estimation of pico-satellite attitude dynamics and external torques via Unscented Kalman Filter
Söken, Halil Ersin (FapUNIFESP (SciELO), 2014-01-01)
In this study, an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) algorithm is designed for estimating the attitude of a picosatellite and the in-orbit external disturbance torques. The estimation vector is formed by the satellite's attitude, angular rates, and the unknown constant components of the external disturbance torques acting on the satellite. The gravity gradient torque, residual magnetic moment, sun radiation pressure and aerodynamic drag are all included in the estimated external disturbance torque vector. The sa...
A PARALLEL BACKWARD-CHAINING INFERENCE ENGINE FOR PRODUCTION SYSTEMS
ABUSUOD, SM; TOLUN, MR (1992-04-24)
In this paper, a new model to parallelize the backward-chaining inference technique in production systems called ParBack is presented. In this model, the data dependencies between rules are analyzed and then converted to special notations that constitute the search space. Parallelism is exploited in three directions: some processors are dedicated to perform the inference process; other processors perform processes that guide the inference process to the useful paths in the search space; and a third group of...
Intensity vector direction exploitation for exhaustive blind source separation of convolutive mixtures
Günel Kılıç, Banu; Hacıhabiboğlu, Hüseyin (2009-04-19)
This article presents a technique that uses the intensity vector direction exploitation (IVDE) method for exhaustive separation of convolutive mixtures. While only a four-element compact sensor array is used, multiple channels for all possible source directions are produced by exhaustive separation. Singular value decomposition (SVD) is then applied to determine the signal subspace and the directions of the local maxima of the signal energy. This information is then used to select the channels containing th...
Nonlinear flutter calculations using finite elements in a direct Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation
Seber, Guclu; Bendiksen, Oddvar O. (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), 2008-06-01)
A fully nonlinear aeroelastic formulation of the direct Eulerian-Lagrangian computational scheme is presented in which both structural and aerodynamic nonlinearities are treated without approximations. The method is direct in the sense that the calculations are done at the finite element level, both in the fluid and structural domains, and the fluid-structure system is time-marched as a single dynamic system using a multistage Runge-Kutta scheme. The exact nonlinear boundary condition at the fluid-structure...
Performance analysis of adaptive loading OFDM under Rayleigh fading
Canpolat, B; Tanik, Y (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2004-07-01)
In this paper, we investigate the performance of adaptive loading orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) under Rayleigh fading with maximal ratio-combining (MRC) diversity at the receiver. We assume that channel-state information is available at both the transmitter and the receiver. Closed-form expressions for the lower bound on the average capacity of OFDM transmission under Rayleigh fading are provided for ideal MRC diversity. Simple approximate expressions for the average capacity of the Rayl...
