Whorfian variations on Kantian themes: Kuhn's linguistic turn

Grunberg, T
Thomas Kuhn's post-1980 writings have increasingly emphasized the role played by language in the characterization of scientific revolutions and incommensurability. We argue that Kuhn's 'linguistic turn' can be understood best against the background of a Whorfian conception of language and certain neo-Kantian themes. While this enables Kuhn to refine and unify his earlier views, it also creates some difficulties. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

Therapeutic philosophy: wittgenstein and heidegger
Temizler, Büke; Turan, Şeref Halil; Department of Philosophy (2020)
Considering comparative studies in philosophy, the relationship between philosophies of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Martin Heidegger has a remarkable place in history. In this thesis, I attempt to discuss their philosophies to reveal their common suggestion to philosophy, which could be understood as a cure to the misleading formulations of philosophical problems. Their philosophical method begins with giving attention to the pre-theoretical attitude of human beings in ordinary life, in evaluating the philosoph...
Mechanıcal roots of Tractatus: the influence of Hermann von Helmholtz, Heinrich Hertz and Ludwig Boltzmann on early Wittgenstein philosophy and the Tractarian picture theory
Kaplan, Osman Baran; Zambak, Aziz Fevzi; Department of Philosophy (2022-5-24)
In this thesis, the biography of Ludwig Wittgenstein, who put forward Tractarian picture theory, which is the subject of the thesis, will be told by focusing especially on his life story before he wrote the Tractatus, and then the general structure of the Tractatus will be discussed. In addition, an introduction will be made by referring to Tractarian picture theory. Then, after the "sign"-based perception theory of Hermann von Helmholtz, who was originally the grandfather of Tractarian picture theory, is e...
Reichenbach on the relative a priori and the context of discovery/justification distinction
Bağçe, Samet (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2011-07-01)
Hans Reichenbach introduced two seemingly separate sets of distinctions in his epistemology at different times. One is between the axioms of coordination and the axioms of connections. The other distinction is between the context of discovery and the context of justification. The status and nature of each of these distinctions have been subject-matter of an ongoing debate among philosophers of science. Thus, there is a significant amount of works considering both distinctions separately. However, the releva...
Thomas Hobbes and Carl Schmitt on the tension between sovereign and law
Ünlü, Özlem; Turan, Şeref Halil; Department of Philosophy (2018)
This thesis aims at developing an understanding of the vital role that the political decision plays in the tension between sovereign and law through an examination of the constitutional theories of Thomas Hobbes and Carl Schmitt. In Schmitt’s classic work Dictatorship of 1921, the sovereign decision derives its legitimacy from its norm-preserving power, whereas in Political Theology appeared in 1922, it legitimizes itself on basis of the norm-giving power. In The Concept of the Political, the decision on wh...
