The footprints of mathematics can be seen in every part of environment. The examples of fractal geometry, fibonacci series and golden ratio can be seen in nature directly. Mathematics and environment relationship does not only depend on the physical similarities; mathematics is also a really important tool for understanding the nature. In this research the role of mathematics and mathematical modeling on ecology and environmental problems will be explained. Mathematics plays a key role in environmental and ecological studies because modeling, statistical techniques, and all other applications of mathematics are used to understand the current situation and help to predict future conditions. Thus, mathematics is a really important tool for solving environmental and ecological problems.

An investigation of pre-service mathematics teachers' semiotic representations and modeling routes in a mathematical modeling activity
Çetinbaş, Merve; Çetinkaya, Bülent; Department of Mathematics Education (2022-9-1)
This study aimed to examine the characteristics of pre-service mathematics teachers' mathematical modeling processes in terms of semiotic representations and the modeling routes varying within the scope of these characteristics. Participants were 13 pre-service teachers studying at a state university in Ankara and enrolled in an elective course entitled “Mathematical Modeling for Teachers.” Data were collected through a technology-integrated mathematical modeling activity. The pre-service mathematics teache...
An Analysis of prospective middle school mathematics teachers‘ argumentation structures in technology and paper-pencil environments
Erkek, Özlem; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; Department of Elementary Education (2017)
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the nature of argumentation structures of prospective middle school mathematics teachers while solving geometry tasks within the GeoGebra and Paper-Pencil groups. The study employed qualitative case study design and the data of which were collected from 16 prospective middle school mathematics teachers during the fall semester of the 2013-2014 academic year. Data were based on the video recordings of the implementations, the focus group interviews and docu...
The role of dynamic geometry software on mathematical creativity of pre-service mathematics teachers in geometry tasks
Melek, Zülal; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Department of Mathematics Education (2021-7-14)
The purpose of the study was to investigate the role of the dynamic geometry software on mathematical creativity of pre-service mathematics teachers in geometry tasks. The sample of the present study was five pre-service mathematics teachers in a public university in Ankara. The sample of the study was selected by the convenience sampling method from the pre-service mathematics teachers who took Exploring Geometry with Dynamic Geometry Applications course. The pre service mathematics teachers asked to...
A Phenomenological study on incorporating the history of mathematics into teaching from the perspective of primary and mathematics teachers
Sözen, Sinem; Akyüz, Didem; Çakıroğlu, Erdinç; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2013)
The aim of the present study is to describe the incorporating the history of mathematics into teaching approach from the perspectives of primary and middle grade mathematics teachers in the classroom environment by means of phenomenological research design. Two primary and two mathematics teachers participated in the study. Data collected from three interviews and two lesson hours observation were analysed based on phenomenological research design. The teachers’ background information and the essence of inc...
Nonlocal symmetries and integrable ordinary differential equations: xuml+3xx center dot+x(3)=0 and its generalizations
Karasu, Emine Ayşe (AIP Publishing, 2009-07-01)
The equation xuml+3xx center dot+x(3)=0 is well known in many areas of mathematics and physics. It possesses the algebra sl(3,R) of Lie point symmetries, hence is equivalent to the equation for a free particle, and both left and right Painleveacute series. We investigate two higher-dimensional analogs in terms of their symmetry and singularity structures. We find a drastic reduction in symmetry and a loss of some of the singularity properties. From the nonlocal symmetries we are able to determine the comple...
