Obstacles of triangular shape are a good approximation to submerged barriers used to control the sediment depositing in reservoirs. The interaction between a Boussinesq constant-flux compositional gravity current and a submerged barrier of triangular shape is studied numerically based on results of 3-D Large Eddy Simulations (LES). The paper discusses the structure of the two-layer flow during the quasi-steady regime observed starting some time after the current passed the obstacle and ending some time after the reflected bore at the obstacle reached the submerged part of the rear end wall upstream of the obstacle. The paper analyzes the changes in the temporal variation of the flux of heavier fluid advected over the bottom barrier, the speed of the reflected hydraulic jump and its characteristics, the depth of the reflected flow and that of the current downstream of the obstacle. The mean flow, turbulence structure and the potential of the current to induce scour over the barrier and downstream of it during the quasi-steady regime are investigated.

Forced hydraulic jump on artificially roughened beds
Şimşek, Çağdaş; Tokyay, Nuray; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
In the scope of the study, prismatic roughness elements with different longitudinal spacing and arrangements have been tested in a rectangular flume in order to reveal their effects on fundamental characteristics of a hydraulic jump. Two basic roughness types with altering arrangements have been tested. Roughness elements of the first type extends through the channel width against the flow with varying length and pitch ratios for different arrangements. The second type is of staggered essence and produced b...
Seismic Performance Evaluation of Concrete Gravity Dams by Using Pseudo Dynamic Testing and Simulations
Aldemir, Alper; Binici, Barış (null; 2017-11-24)
Dams are one of the mostimportantinfrastructure components servingfor water storage and energyproduction.Experimental studies on the seismic response of concrete gravity dams are scarce due to the complications regarding thelargescaleof dams and their interaction with the reservoir. This study presents the results of recent novel pseudo-dynamic dam tests (PSD) along with the nonlinear finite element simulations of the specimens. The test specimens were 1/75 scaled version of the highest ...
Lacustrine mineral facies and implications for estimation of palaeoenvironmental parameters: Neogene intervolcanic Pelitcik basin (Galatean Volcanic Province), Turkey
Süzen, Mehmet Lütfi (2000-06-01)
The mineralogy of the Neogene lacustrine facies of Pelitcik basin was investigated for the purpose of deriving the palaeoenvironmental parameters of this intervolcanic basin. The laboratory studies indicate that dolomite and K-feldspar are the major non-clay minerals in the study area, where plagioclase, analcime, fibrous zeolite and quartz are the minor constituents. Dolomites are found to be non-stoichiometric in chemistry. The clay fraction of the lacustrine facies is composed mainly of dioctahedral smec...
Seismic testing of a scaled roller-compacted-concrete gravity dam
Gharibdoust, Ali; Binici, Barış; Department of Civil Engineering (2016)
Within the last half-century, seismic response analysis of concrete gravity dams has been extensively studied. Studies reveal that two types of failure modes prevail in the form of dam body cracking or base slide. The literature lacks the conditions that clearly differentiate the two failure types. In this context a state of the art single degree of freedom pseudo-dynamic testing was developed to assess the gravity dam response on smooth foundation interface. Three different hazard levels of earthquake name...
Pore network modeling of two phase flow in vuggy carbonates
Akın, Serhat; Erzeybek, S. (2008-01-01)
Carbonate reservoirs have more complex structures than silicate reservoirs because of depositional and diagenetic features. Secondary porosity enhancements due to fracturing or dissolution processes result complex porosity systems and thus complex flow patterns. Carbonates may contain not only matrix and fracture but also the vugs and cavities that are irregular in shape and vary in size from millimeters to centimeters in diameter. Although many of these vugs appear to be isolated from fractures, the mechan...
