Assessment of explosive performance by detonation velocity measurements in Turkey

Real performance of an explosive can be determined by conducting continuous velocity of detonation (VOD) measurements in full scale blast environments. This paper presents and discusses the results of continuous VOD measurements of five different blasting agents carried out at three mines in Turkey. The results show that VOD of a blasting agent varies depending on mainly the rock properties (confinement), presence or absence of sensitizer (chemical formulation), blasthole diameter, and type of primer. The method of continuous VOD measurement is an indispensable and invaluable tool in explosive and primer selection.

Assessment of ideality of some commercial explosives
Bilgin, Hasan Aydın; Esen, S (1999-02-10)
This paper describes the ideality of some commercial explosives with the help of the detonation theory and detonation velocity measurement. Ideality of an explosive can be determined by comparing experimentally measured and ideal detonation velocities. A measured detonation velocity at a certain charge diameter markedly lower than the ideal value indicates incomplete reaction and thus non-ideal detonation. Since it is shown that commercial explosives exhibit non-ideal behavior, two-dimensional detonation th...
Assessment of velocity of detonation at kumtor open pit gold mine
Düzgün, Özkan; Bilgin, Hasan Aydın; Department of Mining Engineering (2011)
One of the most important properties of an explosive is its velocity of detonation (VOD). It is essential that the explosive should detonate at its optimum rate and release sufficient detonation pressure to get good fragmentation under the existing field conditions. The main objectives of this research study are to investigate the effects of explosive type, blast hole diameter, and degree of confinement on the VOD of bulk ANFO and bulk emulsion in Kumtor Open Pit Gold Mine. In this study, the continuous res...
Measurement of the jet radius and transverse momentum dependence of inclusive jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at root S-NN=2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Aad, G.; et. al. (Elsevier BV, 2013-02-26)
Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at root S-NN = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 mu b(-1), ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter system over the pseudorapidity interval vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT <210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-k(t) algorithm with values fo...
Measurement of the sum of WW and WZ production with W plus dijet events in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV
Chatrchyan, S.; et. al. (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-02-01)
A measurement of the inclusive WW+WZ diboson production cross section in proton-proton collisions is reported, based on events containing a leptonically decaying W boson and exactly two jets. The data sample, collected at root s = 7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb(-1). The measured value of the sum of the inclusive WW and WZ cross sections is sigma(pp -> WW + WZ) = 68.9 +/- 8.7 (stat.) +/- 9.7 (syst.) +/- 1.5 (lum.) pb, consistent with the standard mod...
Analysis of internal explosion and structural response to blast loading
Turcan, Uğur Can; Ulaş, Abdullah; Serin, Nadir; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2012)
In this thesis, blast overpressure due to internal explosion and dynamic response to this loading of the structure is analyzed. Firstly, theoretical backgrounds of computational procedures are presented. The basic principles of the hydrocodes and semi empirical methods are explained in detail. In the analysis of blast overpressure, partially vented structures are examined. Three different venting areas and three different charge weights are employed in the study. Peak pressure, time and impulse parameters a...
