The key to enhancing electricity restructuring is to have an adequate competition in the generation sector of power industry. This concept requires a sufficient transmission capacity to support trading in electricity markets, while maintaining the system reliability. However, transmission expansion planning (TEP) for managing adequate transmission capacity is a major challenge which involves uncertainties and risks in restructured electricity environment. This study reviews TEP issues in a general perspective and addresses challenges in Turkey where the liberalization or the electric power industry is underway for establishing a competitive electricity market. A few strategies are proposed in this paper which are directed toward managing the risk in ensuring adequate transmission expansion in Turkey.

Electricity Consumption Behaviors and Clustering of Distribution Grids in Terms of Demand Response
Cetinkaya, Umit; Avcı, Ezgi; BAYINDIR, RAMAZAN (2022-01-01)
Knowing of energy consumption behaviors and similarities between consumers becomes extremely important for electric power systems operators to apply green energy trends by ensuring the stability and flexibility of the grid. Especially in the modern power systems and the energy markets, consumer-based market structures must be implemented. Consumer types, energy needs, and demand behaviors of the distribution grid can affect cumulatively the demand behavior of the full electricity system. Thus, understanding...
Distribution network reconfiguration for loss reduction by multi branch exchange method
Galymov, Birzhan; Güven, Ali Nezih; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2012)
As structure and size of electric power distribution systems are getting more complex, distribution automation schemes become more attractive. One of the features that is desirable in an automated system is feeder reconfiguration for loss reduction. Loss reduction can make considerable savings for a utility and results in released system capacity. There is also improved voltage regulation in the system as a result of reduced feeder voltage drop. In this thesis, multi branch exchange algorithm is introduced ...

It is widely known that the generation and consumption of electricity should be balanced for secure operation and maintenance of the electricity grid. In order to help achieve this balance in the grid, the renewable energy resources such as wind and stream-flow should be forecast at high accuracies on the generation side, and similarly, electricity consumption should be forecast using a high-performance system. In this paper, we deal with short-term electricity consumption forecast in Turkey, and conduct va...
Congestion-driven transmission planning considering the impact of generator expansion
TOR, Osman Bulent; Güven, Ali Nezih; Shahidehpour, Mohammad (2008-05-01)
This paper presents a multi-year transmission expansion planning (TEP) model which considers the transmission congestion and the impact of generation investment cost in the planning horizon. The Benders decomposition approach is utilized which decomposes TEP into a master problem and two subproblems representing security and optimal operation. The operation cost due to congestion (OCC) is considered in the proposed model given that the congestion level is a proper criterion for measuring the degree of compe...
