The world is fast becoming a global village due to the increasing daily requirement of energy by all population across the world while the earth in its form cannot change. The need for energy and its related services to satisfy human social and economic development, welfare and health is increasing. Returning to renewables to help mitigate climate change is an excellent approach which needs to be sustainable in order to meet energy demand of future generations. The study reviewed the opportunities associated with renewable energy sources which includes: Energy Security, Energy Access, Social and Economic development, Climate Change Mitigation, and reduction of environmental and health impacts. Despite these opportunities, there are challenges that hinder the sustainability of renewable energy sources towards climate change mitigation. These challenges include Market failures, lack of information, access to raw materials for future renewable resource deployment, and our daily carbon footprint. The study suggested some measures and policy recommendations which when considered would help achieve the goal of renewable energy thus to reduce emissions, mitigate climate change and provide a clean environment as well as clean energy for all and future generations.

Sustainable hydrogen production process development using reducible oxides
Çalışan, Atalay; Üner, Deniz; Department of Chemical Engineering (2020)
The energy demand is driven by increasing world population and living standards. Sustaining this demand with available and renewable energy sources is a major challenge. The options such as solar and wind power, are unreliable for a steady energy production due to their intermittent nature. Therefore, the storage of renewable energy, such as hydrogen, gains importance. In the scope of this thesis, a sustainability barrier in front of solar integrated hydrogen production processes was addressed in terms of m...
Green energy for the battlefield
Aslan, Murat; Isik, Halil (2017-01-01)
Population of the world is growing with increasing rate and it seems that existing fossil fuel energy sources will not be able to meet energy demand in the near future. Energy is not only crucial for civil sector but also it is one of the most important assets in defense sector. Energy for military operations is mostly provided from fossil fuel as it is the case in other sectors; however, fossil fuels have hazardous effects to the environment and cause global environment concerns. These drawbacks of fossil ...
Literature review on BIM-based building energy performance optimization
Can, Esra; Akçamete Güngör, Aslı (İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi; 2020-11-14)
Buildings comprise a large part of global energy consumption and make a significant contribution to overall CO2 emissions in the world. Therefore, increasing the energy efficiency of buildings becomes a priority to reduce these undesirable effects. Building energy performance assessments are complex multi-criteria problems as the energy performance is affected by many factors such as building orientation, envelope design, climate conditions, daylighting levels, and HVAC system usage schedules. This complica...

The energy and water demands have constantly been increasing all over the world due to rising population and due to advances in science. This fact obligates the usage of natural resources to supply more and more water and energy. Of course, the most important structures that can serve this purpose are dams. However, the behaviour of dams, especially under the effect of seismic actions, is one of the most complicated problems in earthquake engineering. This is because; dams usually rest on flexible foundatio...
Assessment of recently developed inner city neighborhoods according to sustainable urban planning and design criteria: the case of Çukurambar
Köken, Kayhan; Şenyel Kürkçüoğlu, M. Anıl.; Urban Design in City and Regional Planning Department (2019)
The world population is increasing rapidly while the most significant effects can be observed in cities. Environmental, economic and social problems are increasing continuously along with this urban growth. Classical urban planning and design approaches are no longer sufficient to address these problems. Thus, more sustainable methods are being developed to solve them. Sustainable development concept addressing current environmental, economic and social issues are on the agenda of Turkey, similar to the wor...
