An investigation for the development of an interactive computer program for the assessment of strength of a single fastener composite joint in single shear was carried out. Database from previous experimental programs and design sources was evaluated for the establishment of the program. Some experiments were also done with single shear bolted carbon fiber reinforced composite laminates. The suggested computer program models the joint behavior by considering the laminates as homogeneous plates with representative constant Young's moduli and the fastener as a short beam lying on a foundation with constant foundation modulus. Assessment is based on the computed stress distribution in the shank and along the lap thicknesses. The developed program is to be used for optimization purposes with a minimum input yielding short turn-around times allowing many design iterations.

Analysis of filament wound tubes against torsion
Parnas, L; Akkas, N (1997-06-06)
The response of filament-wound composite tubes under pure torsional loading has been investigated. The tubes, produced using the wet winding technique, are made of E-Glass, S2-Glass, Aramid and Carbon/Epoxy with three lamination sequences and three different helix-winding angles. Experiments have been performed by applying twisting moment at the free end which is also free to extend or contract in axial direction while keeping the other end fixed by special end fixtures. Specimens have the same internal dia...
Exact solution of rotating FGM shaft problem in the elastoplastic state of stress
Akis, Tolga; Eraslan, Ahmet Nedim (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2007-10-01)
Plane strain analytical solutions to estimate purely elastic, partially plastic and fully plastic deformation behavior of rotating functionally graded (FGM) hollow shafts are presented. The modulus of elasticity of the shaft material is assumed to vary nonlinearly in the radial direction. Tresca's yield criterion and its associated flow rule are used to formulate three different plastic regions for an ideal plastic material. By considerina different material compositions as well as a wide range of bore radi...
Design and analysis of filament wound composite tubes
Balya, Bora; Parnas, Kemal Levend; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2004)
This thesis is for the investigation of the design and analysis processes of filament wound composite tubes under combined loading. The problem is studied by using a computational tool based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). Filament wound tubes are modeled as multi layered orthotropic tubes. Several analyses are performed on layered orthotropic tubes by using FEM. Results of the FEM are examined in order to investigate characteristics of filament wound tubes under different combined loading conditions. W...
Performance Examination of Two Seismic Strengthening Procedures by Pseudodynamic Testing
Kurt, Efe Gokce; Kurç, Özgür; Binici, Barış; Canbay, Erdem; Ozcebe, Guney (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2012-01-01)
Pseudodynamic testing was employed to observe the seismic performance of two retrofit methods on two-story, three-bay frame structures. The test frames had hollow clay tile (HCT) infill in the central bay and incorporated the seismic deficiencies of Turkish construction practice, such as use of plain reinforcing bars, low-strength concrete, and insufficient confining steel. Two noninvasive and occupant-friendly retrofit schemes suggested in the Turkish Earthquake Code, namely, use of fiber-reinforced polyme...
Development of postprocessor, simulation and verification software for a five-axis CNC milling machine
Cengiz, Ender; Gökler, Mustafa İlhan; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2005)
Five-axis CNC milling machine tools bring great facility to produce complex workpieces with increased dimensional accuracy and better surface quality in shorter machining times. However, kinematics of five-axis machine tools has a complex form which makes it difficult to operate these machine tools properly. The difficulty arises from the complexity of NC-Code generation and tool path verification. Collision of machine tool or setup components with each other is a severe problem in five-axis machining opera...
