Performance as an architectural design paradigm has been emerging during the recent years. We have developed an understanding that we formalized as a taxonomy for performative architecture that considers performance from three points of view: health, safety and security performance; functional and efficiency performance; and psychological, social, cultural, and esthetic performance. This paper focuses on a design project that explores these ideas as a performative architecture proposal. The project focuses on the architectural transformation of the Defense Line of Amsterdam, 41 forts, as a green belt. This transformation considers a holistic approach of defining a general method and guideline. We developed a series of parametric models for the definition and generation of designs. The first model computes an urbanization level for each fort. Consequently, models are developed in 4 stages: regional design, urban design, building design, and production of a scale model, and these are applied in an iterative manner to reach design outcomes for the project.

Performative design processes in architectural practices in Turkey: architects’ perception
Ataman, Cem; Gürsel Dino, İpek (2021-10-01)
During the last decades, the increasing need to ensure building performance during architectural design has led to highly interactive relations between architecture and various other disciplines, in which concepts of sustainability and building performance are tightly integrated into the design process. However, the adoption of these concepts in architectural practices and the recent advancements in the field have remained rather slow. This research aims to understand performative design (PD) in the context...
Performative design thinking in architectural practice
Ataman, Cem; Gürsel Dino, İpek; Department of Architecture (2018)
During the last decades, the increasing need to ensure building performance during architectural design practices has led to highly interactive relations between architecture and various other disciplines, in which performance concepts are tightly integrated into the building design process. Computational tools supporting performative architectural design processes make this interdisciplinary integration possible. The critical consequence of the early consideration of performative principles and the collabo...
Performative architecture as a guideline for transformation of the defence line of Amsterdam
Albayrak, Canan; Baykan, Ahmet Can; Department of Architecture (2011)
The main topic that is researched in this study is: what performative architecture is and its role in the design process and product. In the scope of performative architecture the aim is to focus what a building does rather than what it is and the fact that architecture should have the capability of being adaptable to changing time, conditions and environment. A design problem is taken under consideration and designed from the scope of performative architecture. The design problem is the transformation of t...
The dialogue of type and model in architecture
Tunçbaş, Adil; Cengizkan, Ali; Department of Architecture (2006)
The idea of type has always been a crucial factor in the field of architecture. Not only it works as a dominator in the design process of architecture but also it supplies the certain ways through which architecture communicates with the observer. In order to understand the interaction between architecture and the observer the idea of type appears as a critical point. This study will be an attempt to understand the dialogue of type and model in architecture. Throughout the research Anthony Vidler’s article ...
A Method for performance based design exploration : generating external shading units for an office building in Nicosia, Cyprus
Burak, Ercan; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2013)
Performance based design exploration has been practiced in architectural design for more than four decades. It has been within the scope of the expertise of technical and engineering professionals until now, and has become widely accessible to the architect within the last decade Latest advances in the computational and parametric tools and user interface enhancements in the simulation software has rendered possible the active involvement of the architect into the process. Every design process needs a custo...
