EDUCATING WOMEN FOR SUCCESS IN PHYSICS - LESSONS FROM TURKEY

Uzun, Ali
A comparison of Turkish and U.S. statistics shows that women in Turkey earn a much larger percentage of physics degrees at all levels than do women in the United States. The Turkish educational system is structured so that female students take the same mathematics and science courses at the same level of skill in high school as do male students. This common background is followed by much greater success for Turkish women university students in all areas of science and engineering.

Known-groups validity of the translated version of self-monitoring: A comparison of conservatoire students and university students
Öner Özkan, Bengi (SAGE Publications, 2007-06-01)
The aim of this study was to test the known-groups validity of the Turkish translation of Snyder's 1974 Self-monitoring Scale by administering a translated version to 151 first-year university students (85 men, 66 women) and 39 first year conservatoire students from the School of Theatre (18 men, 21 women). The mean score of the latter group was higher than the mean for regular university students. The finding was regarded as an indicator of known-groups validity.
Experimental Study on the Effects of Winglets on the Performance of Two Interacting Horizontal Axis Model Wind Turbines
Ostovan, Y.; Uzol, Oğuz (2016-10-07)
The focus of this experimental study is to investigate the effects of winglets on the performance of two interacting similar horizontal axis model wind turbines. For this purpose, a downwind winglet is designed and manufactured to be attached to the blade tips of the upstream turbine. A set of wing extensions with the same length as the winglets is also produced to be compared to the winglets. Power and thrust coefficients of both turbines are measured with winglets as well as with wing extensions attached ...
Gender segregation in Turkish manufacturing industry: 1985-1998
Kasnakoğlu, Zehra; Dikbayır, Gülfer (Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi (Ankara, Turkey), 2002)
This study attempts to quantify and analyze the magnitude of gender segregation in Turkey. Measures of gender segregation by economic activity are obtained for all sectors of the economy for the 1985-1998 period. The results suggest that there is gender segregation by economic activity within the aggregate economy. The manufacturing sector and its sub-sectors —in particular, the three sectors that comprise the highest shares in women’s employment within the industry, namely a) food, beverages and tobacco, b...
Measurement of the Azimuthal Angle Dependence of Inclusive Jet Yields in Pb plus Pb Collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV with the ATLAS Detector
Aad, G.; et. al. (American Physical Society (APS), 2013-10-09)
Measurements of the variation of inclusive jet suppression as a function of relative azimuthal angle, Delta phi, with respect to the elliptic event plane provide insight into the path-length dependence of jet quenching. ATLAS has measured the Delta phi dependence of jet yields in 0.14 nb(-1) of root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb + Pb collisions at the LHC for jet transverse momenta p(T) > 45 GeV in different collision centrality bins using an underlying event subtraction procedure that accounts for elliptic flow. The...
Immigrant domestic women workers in Ankara and Istanbul
Çelik, Nihal; Ecevit, Fatma Yıldız; Department of Sociology (2005)
This study focuses on the relationship between global economy and women̕s labor within a feminist standpoint by examining the personal and occupational experiences of immigrant women doing domestic work in Turkey. The main concern of this study is to investigate how working and living experiences of immigrant domestic women workers in Turkey are shaped by their illegal worker and immigrant status. The aim of this study is to listen to the personal experiences of immigrant domestic women workers from themsel...
