Rock mass classification systems provide more insight into rock mass conditions. Therefore, rock mass classification systems, mainly used in engineering applications is an empirical design method. RMR, Q, and M-RMR classification systems take into account 28 geotechnical parameters. To characterize rock mass behavior for each of geotechnical intervals, 28 geotechnical parameter must be described. The number of data gathered for all boreholes increases exponentially. As a result, evaluation of these data and also reporting is quite difficult and time-consuming procedure. In order to overcome these difficulties, ROCKMASS v2.0 has been developed, which is only based on RMR, Q and M-RMR classification systems. The geotechnical parameters obtained from each of geotechnical interval can be easily recorded by ROCMASS v2.0. After recording all the data for borehole, the needed log reports and evaluations for investigated borehole are given by ROCKMASS v2.0.

Fuzzy Rock Mass Rating: Soft-Computing-Aided Preliminary Stability Analysis of Weak Rock Slopes
YARDIMCI, AHMET GÜNEŞ; Karpuz, Celal (2018-01-01)
Rock mass classification systems are the most commonly used empirical tools in preliminary design of rock slopes. In spite of numerous advantages, these systems lack the common drawbacks of classification systems originated from uncertainties. These drawbacks may lead to similar or so close quality scores for different rock mass properties. Fuzzy Sets is a rising trend in describing Geomechanical problems by including the expert opinion. Especially in the case of weak rocks it allows prediction of more real...
Numerical modeling of discontinuous rock slopes utilizing the 3DDGM (three-dimensional discontinuity geometrical modeling) method
Azarafza, Mohammad; Asghari-Kaljahi, Ebrahim; Akgün, Haluk (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2016-5-5)
The geometry of discontinuities in a rock mass is one of the most important influences on the behavior and characteristics of that rock mass. The geometry of discontinuities largely determines the stability of the rock mass, as well as appropriate methods for reinforcing and stabilizing that mass. This study introduces the 3DDGM (three-dimensional discontinuity geometrical modeling) method, which is based on the 3DGM (three-dimensional geometrical modeling) algorithm that was developed using the Mathematica...
Laboratory investigation of shear behavior of rock discontinuities based on shear rate, size and roughness characteristics
İşleyen, Ergin; Düzgün, H. Şebnem; Department of Mining Engineering (2017)
Rock mass characteristics are significantly influenced by the presence of discontinuities. In order to develop safe rock engineering designs, factors affecting shear behavior of rock discontinuities should be carefully analyzed. In this study, effects of shear rate, sample size, roughness characteristics and co-dependency of these effects are investigated on rock discontinuity sample replicas. 3D models of the rock discontinuities are generated with close-range digital photogrammetry. Then, discontinuity mo...
Application of Rock Mass Classification Systems for Future Support Design of the Dim Tunnel Near Alanya
Coşar, Songül; Ünal, Erdal; Department of Mining Engineering (2004)
In this thesis, the results of a number of rock mass classification systems applied to Dim-higway tunnel study area are presented. The tunnel ground was classified according to Rock Mas Rating (RMR), Modified Rock mass Rating (M-RMR), Rock mass quality (Q), Geological Strength Index (GSI) and New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Dim Tunnel has a horse-shoe shape, with a diameter of 10 meters and maximum overburden thickness of 70 meters. During studies, the geological and geotechnical characteristics of th...
A classification system for excavation of surface coal measures
Karpuz, Celal (1990-02-01)
A classification system based on the relevant rock mass and material properties of the ground and their influence on excavation equipment performance is described. An excavation rating system is proposed utilizing some rock mass and material properties which influence excavation performances; namely, uniaxial compressive strength, hardness, discontinuity spacing, degree of weathering and seismic wave velocity. The work was carried out in operating Turkish surface lignite mines. It is suggested that this sys...
