Neurosecretory cells in the molluses Helix have perikarya that show clear signs of adaptation for both the synthesis and the discharge of secretory material. They are characterized morphologically by juxtaposition with the neural lamella. Passage of hormone into the haemocoel is apparently facilitated in many cases by the extreme attenuation of areas of the lamella and perineurium adjacent to the perikarya and by other forms of histological differentiation. Presumptive sites of release are characterized by prominent aggregations of synaptoid vesicles and the discharge of the contents of secretory granules by exocytosis.

Embryonic stem cell-derived motoneurons provide a highly sensitive cell culture model for botulinum neurotoxin studies, with implications for high-throughput drug discovery.
Kiriş, Erkan; Burnett, JC; Kota, KP; Koh, DC; Wanner, LM; Torres-Melendez, E; Gussio, R; Tessarollo, L; Bavari, S (Elsevier BV, 2011-05-01)
Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) inhibit cholinergic synaptic transmission by specifically cleaving proteins that are crucial for neurotransmitter exocytosis. Due to the lethality of these toxins, there are elevated concerns regarding their possible use as bioterrorism agents. Moreover, their widespread use for cosmetic purposes, and as medical treatments, has increased the potential risk of accidental overdosing and environmental exposure. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop novel modalities to counter ...
Structural properties of an engineered outer membrane protein G mutant, OmpG-16SL, investigated with infrared spectroscopy
Yilmaz, Irem; Yildiz, Ozkan; KORKMAZ ÖZKAN, FİLİZ (Informa UK Limited, 2019-05-31)
The structural and functional differences between wild type (WT) outer membrane protein G and its two mutants are investigated with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Both mutants have a long extension to the primary sequence to increase the number of beta-strands from 14 (wild type) to 16 in an attempt to enlarge the pore diameter. The comparison among proteins is made in terms of pH-dependent conformational changes and thermal stability. Results show that all proteins respond to pH change but at dif...
Transcription termination and RNA degradation contribute to silencing of RNA polymerase II transcription within heterochromatin.
Vasiljeva, L; Kim, M; Terzi Çizmecioğlu, Nihal; Soares, LM; Buratowski, S (Elsevier BV, 2008-02-15)
Within the heterochromatin of budding yeast, RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) transcription is repressed by the Sir2 deacetylase. Although heterochromatic silencing is generally thought to be due to limited accessibility of the underlying DNA, there are several reports of RNAPII and basal transcription factors within silenced regions. Analysis of the rDNA array revealed cryptic RNAPII transcription within the "non-transcribed" spacer region. These transcripts are terminated by the Nrd1 /Sen1 complex and degraded ...
Inositol phospholipids activate plasma membrane ATPase in plants
Memon, Abdul Razaque; Chen, Qiuyun; Boss, Wendy F. (Elsevier BV, 1989-8)
Phosphatidylinositol-4-monophosphate and phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate increased the activity of the vanadate-sensitive ATPase associated with plasma membranes isolated from both sunflower hypocotyls and carrot suspension culture cells. The response was not due to the metabolism of the polyphosphoinositides since diacylglycerol, inositol-1,4-bisphosphate, inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate, glycerophosphoinositol monophosphate and glycerophosphoinositol bisphosphate had no effect. These data suggest that ...
Cloning, characterization and heterologous expression of the aspartokinase and aspartate semialdehyde dehydrogenase genes of cephamycin C-producer Streptomyces clavuligerus
Tunca, S; Yilmaz, EI; Piret, J; Liras, P; Özcengiz, Gülay (Elsevier BV, 2004-09-01)
Carbon flow through the lysine branch of the aspartate biosynthetic pathway is a rate-limiting step in the formation of cephamycin C, a broad spectrum P-lactam antibiotic produced by Streptomyces clavuligerus. In this study, genes which encode the enzymes catalyzing the first two steps of the aspartate pathway, ask (aspartokinase) and asd (aspartate semialdehyde dehydrogenase), in S. clavuligerus NRRL 3585 were cloned and sequenced. Nucleotide sequencing and codon preference analysis revealed three complete...
