Radiation-induced solid state polymerization of acenaphthylene was studied by using Co-60-gamma-rays. The extent of polymerization at room temperature reached 68% when acenaphthylene was irradiated with a dose of 2.5 MGy. Prolonged exposure to the radiation decreased the molecular weight of the polymers. The post-polymerization of acenaphthylene was found to occur at relatively high temperatures close to the melting point of acenaphthylene. Absence of an effective termination step allows the enhancement of post-polymerization at higher temperatures after a limiting conversion is accomplished.

Immobilization of tyrosinase in polysiloxane/polypyrrole copolymer matrices
Arslan, Ahu; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2006)
Immobilization of tyrosinase in conducting copolymer matrices of pyrrole functionalized polydimethylsiloxane/polypyrrole (PDMS/PPy) were achieved by electrochemical polymerization. The polysiloxane/polypyrrole/tyrosinase electrode was constructed by the entrapment of enzyme in conducting matrices during electrochemical copolymerization. Maximum reaction rate (Vmax) and Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) were investigated for immobilized enzyme. Enzyme electrodes were prepared in two different electrolyte/solven...
Synthesis and characterization of thiophene functionalized polystyrene copolymers and their electrochemical properties
Sahin, E; Camurlu, P; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Mercore, VM; Cianga, I; Yagci, Y (Wiley, 2005-12-01)
Thiophene functionalized polystyrene samples (TFPS) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene, followed by Suzuki coupling with 3-thiophene (Th) boronic acid. Conducting graft polymer of TFPS with thiophene was achieved at 1.5 V in tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate/dichloromethane (TBAFB/DM) by electrochemical methods. Spectroelectrochemical analysis of the resulting copolymers [P(TFPS-co-Th)] reflected electronic transitions at 449, 721 and 880 nm, revealing pi - pi* tra...
Electrochemical polymerization and characterization of polyether-substituted aniline derivatives
Tirkeş, Süha; Oenal, Ahmet M. (Wiley, 2007-08-01)
New compounds consisting of aniline units linked by polyether bridges have been synthesized and their electrochemical polymerization was performed via constant potential electrolysis and cyclic voltammetry in an aqueous solution containing 3.0 moI L-1 H2SO4. Chemical polymerization was carried out using (NH4)(2)S2O8 as oxidizing agent. It was found that both methods gave the same polymer product without any cleavage of the polyether bridge between aniline rings. The polymers were characterized using the Fou...
Synthesis and surface properties of polydimethylsiloxane-based block copolymers: poly[dimethylsiloxane-block- (ethyl methacrylate)] and poly[dimethylsiloxane-block-(hydroxyethyl methacrylate)]
Vargun, Elif; Usanmaz, Ali (Wiley, 2010-12-01)
A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) macroazoinitiator was synthesized from bis(hydroxyalkyl)-terminated PDMS and 4,4'-azobis-4- cyanopentanoic acid by a condensation reaction. The bifunctional macroinitiator was used for the block copolymerization of ethyl methacrylate (EMA) and 2-(trimethylsilyloxy) ethyl methacrylate (TMSHEMA) monomers. The poly(DMS-block-EMA) and poly(DMS-block-TMSHEMA) copolymers thus obtained were characterized using Fourier transform infrared and (1)H NMR spectroscopy and differential scann...
Synthesis, characterization and electrochromic properties of copolymer of 3-{[4-(thien-3-yl-methoxy)phenoxy]methyl} thiophene with thiophene
Erden, Ayca; Sahin, Elif; Gullu, Mustafa; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Elsevier BV, 2006-08-01)
(3- {[4-(Thien-3-yl-methoxy)phenoxy]methyl} thiophene) (TMPMT) was synthesized via the reaction of 3-bromomethyl-thiophene with hydroquinone and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Electrochemical copolymerization of TMPMT with thiophene in acetonitrile/boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (AN/BFEE) solvent mixture was achieved using tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAFB) as the supporting electrolyte. Resulting copolymer was characterize...
