Several different time series of chlorophyll images from the 1997-2000 Seaviewing, Wide Field-of-view Sensor data set have been analysed to gain a perspective on the dynamical and biological variability in the Black Sea, particularly oil its northwestern shelf region and along the Anatolian coastal zone. The images are interpreted in terms of documenting the close link between biological production and physical dynamics of the boundary system, and of emphasizing the role of eddy processes on controlling mesoscale chlorophyll distributions. It is shown that western coastal waters of the Black Sea are characterized by permanently high chlorophyll concentrations of more than 4.0 mg m(-3), often subject to considerable dynamical transformations, and modulated by mesoscale Structures including southward elongated filament-like features extending up to 100 km offshore with a lifetime of Lip to a month. Filaments, meanders, offshore jets and other forms of mesoscale and sub-mesoscale structures appear as a common signature of the system along the Anatolian coast. They play an important role in the cross-stream transport of biota and chemical constituents, and thus supporting productivity within the interior parts of the basin. The images reveal phytoplankton blooms lasting several months in all three autumn seasons. During autumn 1999 to winter 2000, the phytoplankton biomass declines in December, and then increases to form another bloom in February-March 2000, albeit somewhat weaker. For the prevous 2 years (1997, 1998), the autumn bloom is extended towards the first half of the winter but the late winter early spring bloom is absent.

The experimental analysis on the Late Quaternary deposits of the Black Sea
Tekiroglu, SE; Ediger, V; Yemenicioglu, S; Kapur, S; Akca, E (Elsevier BV, 2001-01-01)
Holocene sediments taken from the south-eastern and western Black Sea have been investigated in relation to their geochemical, sedimentological and mineralogical characteristics. Their textures are characterized by their low amount of sand, upward-increasing silt and downward-increasing clay contents. While the terrigenous materials transported from Anatolian volcanic-based sources and European alluvial sediments form the shore deposits, the deep-sea sediments mainly consist of the marine biological product...
Satellite-detected early summer coccolithophore blooms and their interannual variability in the Black Sea
Cokacar, T; Oguz, T; Kubilay, N (Elsevier BV, 2004-08-01)
Interannual variability of the prevalent early summer coccolithophore blooms within surface waters of the Black Sea was studied by means of satellite-based bio-optical observations. Two coccolith detection algorithms, tested for the Black Sea conditions, were found to provide comparable spatial coccolith patterns consistent with the corresponding true color images. Reliability of the algorithms is also supported by several sets of time-series measurements in different parts of the basin. An analysis of 6 ye...
Identification of the oxic anoxic interface by isopycnal surfaces in the black sea
SAYDAM, AHMET CEMAL; Tuğrul, Süleyman; BAŞTÜRK, ÖZDEN; Oğuz, Temel (Elsevier BV, 1993-07-01)
The analysis of hydrochemical data collected in the Black Sea since 1987 shows that the upper boundary of the oxic/anoxic interface zone coincides with the nitrate maximum at the depths of sigma(t) congruent-to 15.40 +/- 0.10 isopycnal surface. Its lower boundary corresponds to the phosphate maximum depth at sigma(t) congruent-to 16.20 +/- 0.05 isopycnal surface, independent of the geographical location and season. In the absence of the continuous pump cast measurement system, and when the oxygen and sulphi...
Assessment of temporal variation and sources of PCBs in the sediments of Mediterranean Sea, Mersin Bay, Turkey
Gedik, Kadir; İmamoğlu, İpek (Elsevier BV, 2011-01-01)
Information on temporal distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the coastal sediments of Mediterranean Sea, Mersin was compiled using data published between 1980 and 2009, and the present study. The first congener specific PCB results from the region yield concentration levels of Sigma(41) PCBs in sediments ranging from 0.61 to 1.04 ng g(-1). Sediment profiles show penta-, hexa- and hepta-chlorobiphenyls, specifically, #149 and 153 as the most abundant congeners in all samples. Comparison of tot...
Development and application of a three-dimensional orthogonal coordinate semi-implicit hydrodynamic model
Sankaranarayanan, S.; Ward, Matthew C. (Elsevier BV, 2006-09-01)
The Late Quaternary sedimentation and structural features of the continental shelf of Antalya Bay (SW Turkey) have been investigated using a single channel high-resolution shallow profiling system. Two seismic units denoted as unit 1 and unit 2 bounded by two major unconformities (R-1 and R-2) have been identified. R-1 and R-2 are type-1 sequence boundaries that formed under sub-aerial conditions during the Late Quaternary sea level lowstands. An acoustic basement (AB) is recognized in the study region; it ...
