Removal of phenolic compounds from rubber-textile wastewaters (RTWWs) by physico-chemical process was investigated by using four different types of coagulants (Al-2(SO4)(3), Fe-2(SO4)(3), FeSO4, FeCl3) with or without lime (Ca(OH)(2)) addition, in jar-test experiments. The RTWWs of the present tire-cord fabric plant may contain seven different types of dipping solutions (DSs), which provide an adhesive property to the fabric. The optimum results were obtained by using 50% FeCl3 solution and lime at various dosages at 23 degreesC, which satisfy the decision criterion of high treatment efficiency (TE) in removing the phenolic compounds, good settling rate (SR) of the flocs, and a reasonably low cost of treatment. The achieved treatment efficiencies are over 94% in most of the cases. First adding lime and then the coagulant yield better results in terms of the treatment efficiency and settling behavior of the formed flocs. One minute rapid mixing after the addition of lime and coagulant, followed by 30-min gentle mixing were applied in the experiments successfully. The TE of the process, and the settling rate (SR) of the flocs decrease with the decreasing solution-temperature (from 23 to 15 degreesC), in using FeCl3 as coagulant with the addition of lime. Under these circumstances, the optimum pH of coagulation is found to be around 12.

Removal of methylene blue by new tunable aryl/alkyl ionic liquids/salts (TAAILs) from aqueous solution
Özdemir, Melek (Informa UK Limited, 2019-10-16)
The removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution has been investigated using new tunable 1-aryl-2-alkyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazolium hexafluorophosphate salts ([Ph(R)C(R?)pz][PF6], R: -Cl, -Br, -Me, -OMe, R?: -C2H5, or -C4H9) as an extractant and methylene chloride as a diluent. The influence of p-substituent and alkyl chain length on the removal efficiency of MB from aqueous solution was investigated. The obtained results show that MB was extracted from aqueous solution with high extraction efficiency up...
Removal of hexavalent chromium anions via polymer enhanced ultrafiltration using a fully ionized polyelectrolyte
HAKTANIR, CEREN; Ozbelge, H. Onder; Bicak, Niyazi; Yılmaz, Levent (Informa UK Limited, 2017-01-01)
A fully ionized polyelectrolyte was synthesized for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions by continuous polymer enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF). Effect of operating parameters such as pH, loading, polymer, and competing ion concentrations were examined. Highest Cr(VI) retention was obtained at a loading of 0.01 at pH 4. Increasing both polymer and chromate concentrations at a fixed loading of 0.01 decreased the retention which demonstrated the effect of crowding. In the presence of competing anions such as ...
Effect of Alkyl Derivatization on Several Properties of N-Halamine Antimicrobial Siloxane Coatings
Kocer, Hasan B.; Akdağ, Akın; Ren, Xuehong; Broughton, R. M.; Worley, S. D.; Huang, T. S. (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2008-10-01)
Variation of alkyl substitution at position 5 on the hydantoin ring of a series of N-halamine siloxane derivatives has been employed to better understand the biocidal activities of these compounds for use in preparing antimicrobial coatings. The alkyl derivatization of the hydantoin ring at its 5 position, while an essentially constant chlorine loading is maintained at the I position, has shown that there is little dependence of the antimicrobial efficacy against Escherichia coli O157:H7 on the alkyl chain ...
Pre-ozonation of aqueous azo dye (Acid Red-151) followed by activated sludge process
Gokcen, Fulya; Ozbelge, Tulay A. (Elsevier BV, 2006-10-15)
In this study, the efficiency of the integrated process was investigated in which the pre-ozonation step was followed by activated sludge process (ASP) in treating the aqueous Acid Red-151 (AR 151) solutions. The percent dye removal in the integrated process was found to be 47% for a pre-ozonation time of 30 min, instead of 25% in the singly ASP without pre-ozonation. The treatment efficiency of this process could be higher if the pre-ozonation time of 120 min yielding maximum enhancement of biodegradabilit...
Effect of fluorine substituted benzothiadiazole on electro-optical properties of donor-acceptor-donor type monomers and their polymers
Çakal, Deniz; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar (Elsevier BV, 2020-11-01)
A series of trimeric monomers bearing thiophene donor units and fluorinated analogues of benzothiadiazole acceptor units was synthesized via donor-acceptor-donor approach and polymerized electrochemically in order to investigate the effect of fluorine atom on electro-optical properties of both monomers and their corresponding polymers. All monomers exhibited solvatochromic and fluorescent properties. The introduction of fluorine atom into the conjugated backbone increased the oxidation potentials. Upon movi...
