A new water management plan is needed for the Kucuk Menderes River basin in Turkey, due to increasing water demand and decreasing quality of the groundwater. Vulnerability, quality and risk assessments were performed using a hybrid model containing both hydrogeological and hydrochemical parameters for managing irrigation waters in the basin. The relative contamination (quality) distribution of groundwater at present was established using an irrigation water quality index. The distribution shows the contamination source related problem areas that should be avoided during water management planning. The established contamination vulnerability of the units in the basin indicates the areas that should be dealt with cautiously. The relative risk distribution established using both quality and vulnerability data provides the necessary water planning quality risk criteria for future irrigation applications.

Sustainable development and management of an aquifer system in western Turkey
SAKIYAN, J; Yazıcıgil, Hasan (2004-02-01)
This study presents the establishment of sustainable development and management policies for the Kucuk Menderes River Basin aquifer system in western Turkey. Geological, hydrogeological, and geophysical data are used conjunctively to define various hydrogeological units and their geometry. Distributions of hydraulic-parameter values and recharge are estimated by geostatistical methods and hydrologic simulations, respectively. A finite-difference groundwater flow model is used to represent the unconfined flo...
Scenario Planning for Water Resources A Saudi Arabian Case Study
Dejong, Remy Lucıen; Yazıcıgil, Hasan; Allayla, Rashıd Ibrahım (1989-01-01)
Uncommonly rapid development of the oil-rich Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia has led to heavy stresses on the local groundwater resources and there has arisen concern for the adequacy of supply to sustain future growth. Whereas oil is the only significant export commodity, the demand for it has an important and immediate impact on water exploitation activities. In this article four development scenarios are considered, each resulting in a specific water abstraction pattern. The hydrologic consequences of e...
Seismic vulnerabilities and risks for urban mitigation planning in Turkey
Saner, Tugce Sonmez (2015-09-01)
Chronic seismic hazards and resulting secondary impacts as natural conditions of the country, and the loss of robust building and prudent settlement practices as aggravated by rapid population growth make cities the most vulnerable geographical and social entities in Turkey. For the development of risk reduction policies, an essential step is to prioritize settlements according to their vulnerability levels. This could be determined by hazard probabilities and attributes of the building stock of each settle...
Determination of groundwater threshold values: a methodology applied to Gediz basin
Bulut, Onur Fatih; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2019)
Turkish bylaw on Protection of Groundwater against Pollution and Deterioration requires the establishment of groundwater thresholds in groundwater bodies. According to this regulation, water status, as good or not, is to be determined based on the chemical status. Indeed, in a EU Project entitled “Background Criteria for the Identification of Groundwater Thresholds-BRIDGE”, in an attempt to the implementation of Water Frame Directive, a methodological framework has been developed to determine threshold valu...
Comparison of groundwater recharge estimation techniques: a case study from the Kucuk Menderes River basin in Turkey
Gundogdu, A; Yazıcıgil, Hasan; Kirmizitas, H (2000-04-01)
Quantification of groundwater recharge is a basic prerequisite for efficient groundwater management. While there are several approaches to estimating groundwater recharge rates, some of the approaches proposed cannot be applied in basin-wide hydrogeological investigations due to a lack of data. Thus, some conventional recharge estimation techniques for which data are most often available have to be used in estimating groundwater recharge. In this study, water level fluctuation, the precipitation vs water le...
