In recent years squarines received attention as fluorescent labels. Their very promising spectral properties such as long wavelength absorption and emission, high extinction coefficients and quantum yields could lead novel sensing technologies. In this work newly synthesized fluoroinophores named bis[4-N-(1-aza-4,7,10,13-tetraoxacyclopentadecyl)-3,5-dihydroxyphenyl]squaraine, azacrown-1 and 2 bis[4-N-(1-aza-4,7,10,13,16-pentaoxacyclooctadecyl)-3,5-dihydroxyphenyl]squaraine, azacrown-2 have been used for sodium and potassium sensing in plasticized PVC matrix. The squaraine derivatives exhibited fluorescence emission based optical responses to sodium and potassium with a detection limit of 1.10(-9) M. The sensor compositions exhibited wide response ranges between 10(-9) and 10(-5) M Na+ or K+, and, therefore, may be an alternative method to flame emission spectroscopy. The sensor is fully reversible within the dynamic range and the response time is 3 min under batch conditions. Cross sensitivity to pH is negligible in the pH range of 6.2-7.3. Throughout fiber optic based studies a relative signal change of 54-56% has been achieved. The azacrown dyes have the advantage that they can be excited with long wavelength light and, are, therefore, LED compatible. The cross sensitivity of azacrown-1 and -2 to Ba2+ Ca2+ and NH4+ were also tested in separate solutions.

Catalytic ozonation of industial textile wastewaters in a three phase fluidized bed reactor
Polat, Didem; Özbelge, Ayşe Tülay; Department of Chemical Engineering (2010)
Textile wastewaters are highly colored and non-biodegradable having variable compositions of colored dyes, surfactants and toxic chemicals. Recently, ozonation is considered as an effective method that can be used in the treatment of industrial wastewaters; catalytic ozonation being one of the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), is applied in order to reduce the ozone consumption and to increase the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) removals. In this study, catalytic ozonation of ...
Fluorescence sensing of cations, anions and neutral molecules towards information processing at molecular level
Baytekin, H. Tarık; Akkaya, Engin Umut; Department of Chemistry (2002)
Chromo and fluoro ionophores based on donor (D)-acceptor (A) system in which the ligand is part of the n system of the chromophores have received considerable attention over the last years. Perturbation of the % system by metal in complexation leads to spectral shifts and changes of the emissive properties. Because the aza groups responsible for metal cation binding are also directly involved with the formation of the charge-transfer excited state complexes, metal binding by perylene crown should have a dra...
Thermal characterization of homopolymers, copolymers and metal functional copolymers of vinylpyridines
Elmacı, Ayşegül; Hacaloğlu, Jale; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2008)
Although, the use of vinyl pyridine polymers, especially as matrices for nanoparticle synthesis, is growing considerably, the knowledge of thermal degradation behavior is still missing in the literature. In this study, thermal degradation characteristics of the homopolymers; poly(4-vinylpyridine), P4VP, and poly(2-vinylpyridine), P2VP, the diblock copolymers; polystyrene-blockpoly( 2-vinylpyridine), (PS-b-P2VP) and polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine), (PS-b-P4VP), and the metal functional vinyl polymers...
Real-time monitoring of indigo concentrations in the dyebath with a laser diode spectrometer
Sahin, U; Ulgen, A; Kekec, A; Gökmen, Ali (SAGE Publications, 2004-03-01)
A laser diode absorption spectrometer is coupled with a continuous dilution system for real-time monitoring of indigo dyeing of denim yarn. The reduced form of indigo in the dyebath is continuously pumped by a peristaltic pump into a mixing cuvette, where it is diluted by a factor of 80 with aerated water and oxidized into its stable form. This solution is then pumped into the sampling cell of the laser diode spectrometer for absorption measurements. Monochromatic radiation emitted from the laser diode at 6...
Optical fluoride sensing with a bay region functionalized perylenediimide dye
Yukruk, Funda (2006-01-01)
A perylenedimiide (PDI) derivative functionalized at the perylene core (bay region) to carry phenyl boronic acid groups was shown to interact with fluoride with changes in the emission and absorption spectrum. These changes are most likely due to fluoride-induced aggregation and/or quenching of the perylenediimide dye. The dye is also selective; among halide ions, fluoride anions generate a significant response. Thus, this class of PDI derivatives is likely to be useful in practical fluoride sensing.
