TOBITAK UZAY has conducted a research study on the use of space-based satellite resources for several aspects of agriculture. Especially, there are two precision agriculture related projects: HASSAS (Widespread application of sustainable precision agriculture practices in Southeastern Anatolia Project Region (GAP) Project) and AKTAR (Smart Agriculture Feasibility Project). The HASSAS project aims to study development of precision agriculture practice in GAP region. Multi-spectral satellite imagery and aerial hyperspectral data along with ground measurements was collected to analyze data in an information system. AKTAR aims to develop models for irrigation, fertilization and spectral signatures of crops in Inner Anatolia. By the end of the project precision agriculture practices to control irrigation, fertilization, pesticide and estimation of crop yield will be developed. Analyzing the phenology of crops using NDVI is critical for the projects. For this reason, absolute radiometric calibration of the Red and NIR bands in space-based satellite sensors is an important issue. The Gokturk-2 satellite is an earth observation satellite which was designed and built in Turkey and was launched in 2012. The Gokturk-2 satellite sensor has a resolution 2.5 meters in panchromatic and 5 meters in R/G/B/NIR bands. The absolute radiometric calibration of the Gokturk-2 satellite sensor was performed via the ground-based measurements spectra-radiometer, sun photometer, and meteorological station- in Tuz Golu cal/val site in 2015. In this paper, the first ground-based absolute radiometric calibration results of the Gokturk-2 satellite sensor using Tuz Golu is demonstrated. The absolute radiometric calibration results of this paper are compared with the published cross-calibration results of the Gokturk-2 satellite sensor utilizing Landsat 8 imagery. According to the experimental comparison results, the Gokturk-2 satellite sensor coefficients for red and NIR bands estimated in this work sustained to agree within 2% of calibration coefficients estimated in the cross-calibration results.

Automatic Mapping of Linearwoody Vegetation Features in Agricultural Landscapes
AKSOY, SELİM; AKÇAY, HÜSEYİN GÖKHAN; Cinbiş, Ramazan Gökberk; Wassenaar, Tom (2008-07-11)
Development of automatic methods for agricultural mapping and monitoring using remotely sensed imagery has been an important research problem. We describe algorithms that exploit the spectral, textural and object shape information using hierarchical feature extraction and decision making steps for automatic mapping of linear strips of woody vegetation in very high-resolution imagery. First, combinations of multispectral values and multi-scale Gabor and entropy texture features are used for training pixel le...
Hierarchical classification of Sentinel 2-a images for land use and land cover mapping and its use for the CORINE system
Demirkan, Doga C.; Koz, Alper; Duzguna, H. Sebnem (SPIE-Intl Soc Optical Eng, 2020-06-01)
The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of the Sentinel-2 satellite for land use and land cover (LULC) mapping. The commonly known supervised classification algorithms, support vector machines (SVMs), random forest (RF), and maximum likelihood (ML) classification are adopted for investigation along with a proposed hierarchical classification model based on a coordination of information on the environment land cover system. The main classes for land cover and mapping in the proposed hierarchica...
A new approach to evaluate the MODIS annual NPP product (MOD17A3) using forest field data from Turkey
Gulbeyaz, Onder; Bond-Lamberty, Ben; Akyürek, Sevda Zuhal; West, Tristram O. (Informa UK Limited, 2018-01-01)
In this study, we present the first evaluation of the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) annual net primary production (NPP) for Turkey's forest ecosystems using field measurements. Due to lack of country scale field measurements (i.e. flux tower for forest ecosystems), tree DBH (diameter at breast height) data set provided by Ministry of Forest and Water Affairs (MFWA) of Turkey is used to calculate NPP of Turkey's forest ecosystems. The lack of a reliable NPP data set leads the research...
Real-time gas monitoring at the Tekke Hamam geothermal field (Western Anatolia, Turkey): an assessment in relation to local seismicity
Süer, Selin; Güleç, Nilgün Türkan; Parlaktuna, Mahmut (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-08-01)
This study presents the results of a real-time gas monitoring experiment conducted, via the use of a quadrupole mass spectrometer, in a mofette field within the Tekke Hamam geothermal site in western Anatolia (Turkey), a tectonically active region hosting several east-west trending grabens. The study is aimed to establish a baseline gas profile of the region. Within the framework of the experiment, gas compositions (CO2, N-2, O-2, H-2, H2S, CH4, He, and Ar) and flow rate of a mofette were monitored during t...
Evaluation of cross-track illumination in EO-1 Hyperion imagery for lithological mapping
San, B. Taner; Süzen, Mehmet Lütfi (Informa UK Limited, 2011-01-01)
Hyperspectral remote sensing data is a powerful tool for discriminating lithological units and for the preparation of mineral maps for alteration studies. The spaceborne hyperspectral Hyperion sensor, despite its narrow swath width (similar to 7.5 km), possesses great potential with its 196 channels within the wavelength range 426.82-2395.50 nm. Although it has many advantages such as low cost and on-demand coverage, much uncertainty exists in the utility of its applications. For example, poor signal-to-noi...
