© Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.Today, with the technology-driven developments, healthcare systems and services are being radically transformed to become more effective and efficient. Omics technologies along with mobile sensors and monitoring systems are emerging disruptive technologies, which will provide us the opportunities of a paradigm shifting in medical theory, research and practice. Traditional methods are beginning to convert to a new personalized, predictive, preventive and participatory paradigm based on big data approaches. We anticipate that; next-generation health information systems will be constructed based on tracking all aspects of health status on 24/7, and returning evidence based recommendations to empower individuals. As an example of future personal health record (PHR) concept, GO-WELL is based on clinical envirogenomic knowledge base (CENG-KB) to engage patients for predictive care. In this chapter, we present the design principles of this system, after describing several concepts, including personalized medicine, omics revolution, incorporation of genomic data into medical decision processes, and the utilization of enviro-behavioural parameters for disease risk assessment.

A Decision support system for performance assessment and improvement in PPP healthcare projects
Öngel, Begüm; Tanyer, Ali Murat; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2018)
With the objectives including the reduction of the whole life costs, increasing construction and operation efficiencies and enhancing service quality, Public-Private Partnership (PPP) schemes have been used for healthcare projects across the world over the past two decades. These large-scale projects comprise a long-term partnership period between the public and private sector stakeholders, with a great deal of costs, risks and opportunities. Considering the large number of the parties involved and the inhe...

At the WONCA Europe conference 2009 the recently published 'Research Agenda for General Practice/Family Medicine and Primary Health Care in Europe' was presented. It is a background paper and reference manual, providing advocacy of general practice/family medicine (GP/FM) in Europe. The Research Agenda summarizes the evidence relating to the core competencies and characteristics of the WONCA Europe defi nition of GP/FM, and its implications for general practitioners/family doctors, researchers and policy ma...
Improving resource efficiency in surface coating/painting industry: practical experiences from a small-sized enterprise
Alkaya, Emrah; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (2014-12-01)
The European Commission has an objective of improved resource efficiency in manufacturing enterprises (particularly small- and medium-sized enterprises-SMEs) by structural and technological changes. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the concrete improvements as a result of a systematic resource efficiency methodology applied to an SME in surface coating/painting industry in Turkey which is an EU accession country. Within the context of this study, cadmium plating process was substituted with a less t...
Sharing electronic healthcare records across country borders
Yüksel, Mustafa; Doğaç, Asuman; Department of Computer Engineering (2008)
Today, the application of information and communication technologies to healthcare is on the agenda of many countries. The main aim is to make Electronic Healthcare Records (EHR) of a patient accessible anywhere at any time to all authorized users. This is even valid in the cross-border case; the European Commission has published eHealth interoperability recommendations to the EU Member States, in which the RIDE Project contributed, for the purpose of an interoperable European Health Network. Interoperable ...

The recently published 'Research Agenda for General Practice/Family Medicine and Primary Health Care in Europe' summarizes the evidence relating to the core competencies and characteristics of the Wonca Europe definition of GP/FM, and highlights related needs and implications for future research and policy. The European Journal of General Practice publishes a series of articles based on this document. In a first article, background, objectives, and methodology were discussed. In three subsequent, articles t...
