Occurrence of disinfection by-products in low DOC surface waters in Turkey
ATEŞ, Nuray; Kaplan, S. Sule; ŞAHİNKAYA, Erkan; KİTİŞ, Mehmet; Dilek, Filiz Bengü; Yetiş, Ülkü (2007-04-02)
A total of 29 surface waters from different regions of Turkey were sampled once a month during 2004. Filtered raw water samples were characterized, chlorinated and the concentrations of disinfection by-products (DBPs) were measured. All waters were low in DOC ranging from 0.91 to 4.42 mg/L. The range of annual average trihalornethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) concentrations in all waters was 21-189 and 18-149 mu g/L, respectively. Total mass contributions of halides in THMs and HAAs to absorbable ...
Occurrence, fate and removal of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in Turkish wastewater treatment plants
KOMESLİ, Okan Tarık; Muz, M.; Ak, M. S.; BAKIRDERE, Sezgin; Gökçay, Celal Ferdi (2015-10-01)
Endocrine disrupting compounds, EDCs, are somewhat recently recognized pollutants which are often classed within 'emerging micropollutants' in the environment jargon. These compounds are known to interfere with the delicate balance of the endocrine system of animals and man, causing variety of undesirable outcomes. Their sources in natural waters are the domestic and industrial effluents. The main cause of concern with EDCs is their tendency to accumulate in fish causing gender shifts and reduced fecundity....
Occurrence and load of micropollutants discharged from urban and industrial wastewater treatment plants to receiving environment in the Yeşilırmak Basin
İnce, İrem; Yetiş, Ülkü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2021-8-27)
The occurrence of micropollutants in the aquatic environment is an emerging topic. It is known that the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the main point sources of the micropollutants. With this regard, the purpose of the study is to determine the occurrence of micropollutants in the WWTPs, to detect the significant discharges, and to analyze the impacts of these discharges on the receiving bodies. A 2-year monitoring study was conducted in Yeşilırmak River Basin and 6 urban WWTPs (UWWTPs), 14 industr...
Occurrence and Reduction of Emerging Contaminants in Sludge
Sanin, Faika Dilek (null; 2019-06-13)
Emerging contaminants consist of a wide range of anthropogenic as well as natural substances which include pharmaceuticals, personal care products, steroid hormones, industrial chemicals, pesticides and many other emerging compounds. Since theirconcentrations vary from a few ng/L to several μg/L, they may also be called as micropollutants. There has been a growingawareness and concern about these chemicals for the last few decades since many of these are known to have toxic, carcinogenic orendocrine disrupti...
Occurrence, contamination evaluation and health risks of trace metals within soil, sediments and tailings in southern Tunisia
Khelifi, F.; Mokadem, N.; Liu, G.; Yousaf, Balal; Zhou, H.; Ncibi, K.; Hamed, Y. (2021-07-01)
The current study highlights the impacts of mining and ore processing activities on the environment and human health in a south Mediterranean area of southern Tunisia. A geochemical characterization was achieved by analyzing urban soil, stream sediments, mine wastes (tailings, sludge) and phosphate ore, for trace metals "TM" (Cd, Cr, Zn, Mn) have revealed that the samples are highly enriched with metals. An evaluation of the contamination status was attained by calculating pollution indices. Results showed ...
