Estimation of lining thickness around circular shafts

2001-06-22
In this paper, the broken zone developing, around a circular mine shafts and lining pressure is estimated by integrating the results of numerical analysis and the "cock-load height" equation derived from empirical analysis. During numerical modelling studies, the computer program FLAC2D was utilized. In order to estimate equivalent Mohr failure Envelope from the generalised Hoek Brown failure criterion, a new FISH function was written within FLAC2D . Parametric studies were carried out by considering mRMR (modified Rock Mass Rating) values, depth from surface, shaft diameter, ratio of horizontal principal-stresses and uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock. Finally, the computer program, "SHAFT" was also introduced. This program simplifies the lengthy and complex process of shaft-lining design.

Analytical prediction of thermal displacement capacity of integral bridges built on sand
Dicleli, Murat (SAGE Publications, 2005-02-01)
In this research, analytical equations are developed to calculate the lateral displacement capacity and maximum length limits of integral bridges built on sand based on the low-cycle fatigue performance of the piles under cyclic thermal variations and the ultimate strength of the abutment under positive thermal variations. To formulate the displacement capacity and maximum length limits of integral bridges based on the low cycle fatigue performance of steel H-piles under cyclic thermal variations, first, H-...
Analytical formulation of maximum length limits of integral bridges on cohesive soils
Dicleli, Murat (Canadian Science Publishing, 2005-08-01)
This paper presents an analytical approach for predicting the length limits of integral bridges built on cohesive soils based on the flexural strength of the abutments and the low cycle fatigue performance of the steel H-piles at the abutments under cyclic thermal loading. First, H-piles that can accommodate large inelastic deformations are determined considering their local buckling instability. Then, a damage model is used to determine the maximum cyclic deformations that such piles can sustain. Next, non...
Numerical simulation of non-reacting turbulent flows over a constant temperature solid surface in regression
Karaeren, Cenker; Albayrak, Kahraman; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2007)
In this study, an attempt is made to obtain convergent and stable solutions of the K-E turbulence model equations for non-reacting turbulent flows over an isothermal solid surface in regression. A physics based mathematical model is used to describe the flow and temperature field over the moving surface. The flow is assumed to be two-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible with boundary layer approximations. Parabolized form of the standard K-E equations is adopted to simulate turbulence in the flow. Regressi...
Numerical simulation of scour at the rear side of a coastal revetment
Şentürk, Barış Ufuk; Guler, Hasan Gokhan; Baykal, Cüneyt (2023-05-01)
This paper presents the results of a numerical modeling study on the scouring of unprotected rear side material of a rubble mound coastal revetment due to the overtopping of solitary-like waves utilizing a coupled hydro-morphodynamic computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Three cases having various wave heights are tested with six different turbulence models together with different wall functions. The hydrodynamic results (free-surface elevations, overtopping volumes, and jet thicknesses) and morphologic...
