Implementation of systems thinking skills module for the context of energy
Can, Hediye; Öztekin, Ceren; Department of Elementary Education (2020)
The aim of this dissertation is to explore how pre-service science teachers develop their systems thinking skills in the context of energy. Qualitative methodology is followed through the research. The study conducted in stages that consist of development of systems thinking module for implementation, development of tools to collect data, implementation of the module, and data collection procedure before, during and after the implementation and data analysis. Nine preservice science teachers at the faculty ...
The Effect of history of science instruction on elementary students' scientific literacy
Cansız, Mustafa; Sungur Vural, Semra; Öztekin, Ceren; Department of Elementary Education (2014)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of history of science instruction on elementary students' scientific literacy. Specifically, the effectiveness of history of science instruction over curriculum-oriented instruction was examined in terms of four central components of scientific literacy, which are science process skills, understanding of human circulatory system concepts, attitudes toward science, and nature of science views. A total of 95 sixth-grade students from four classes p...
The effect of problem based learning instruction on 7th grade students’ science achievement, attitude toward science and scientific process skills
Serin, Gökhan; Eryılmaz, Ali; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of instruction based on problem-based learning (PBL) on 7th grade students’ science achievement, attitude toward science course and scientific process skills. The study was conducted in May 2007 with 141 students and four science teachers from four middle schools in Gölbası district of Ankara. A total of eight classes were participated in the study. Four of them were assigned randomly to control group and four of them were assigned randomly to experimen...
Assessing pre-service science teachers’ systems thinking skills using real life scenarios
Öztaş, Melike; Öztekin, Ceren; Teksöz, Gaye; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2018)
The main purpose of this study is to investigate pre-service science teachers’ systems thinking skills with using a real-life scenario as an assessment tool. The nine systems thinking skills defined in this research were discussed in terms of sustainable development. Participants were expected to comprehend integrated nature of environmental, economic and social aspects of this concept in a systemic perspective. Therefore, the real-life scenario used for assessment was selected related with sustainable deve...
Experienced science teachers’ subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge regarding biogeochemical cycles in the context of education for sustainable development
Yılmaz Yendi, Bahar; Öztekin, Ceren; Department of Elementary Education (2019)
This study investigated experienced science teachers’ subject matter (SMK) and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) regarding biogeochemical cycles in the context of education for sustainable development (ESD). Three science teachers (one male, two females) from different schools participated in the study. In this qualitative research, multiple case studies were used as research design. Data were obtained through interviews, content representations, observations, card sorting activity and teacher documents. ...
