Cable hanger plate replacement a case study on Bosporus Bridge
Türer, Ahmet; Caner, Alp (null; 2006-07-19)
Fatigue at steel bridge structures is one of the major problems that often times do not reveal itself until later stages of damage. Design of fatigue prone members or connections is vital especially for non-redundant fracture critical elements. Cyclic traffic and/or wind loads on bridges can further aggravate stress variations at connections. Bridge members or connections that reach their fatigue life or get damaged due to other reasons may become difficult to replace or rehabilitate especially for suspensi...
Cable axial load measurement device and buckling sensor development
Usalan, Emine Ceren; Türer, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Axial compression or tension carrying members may need to be monitored for their structural behaviors and/or damage detection. In this thesis, two different types of practical and cost efficient monitoring devices are proposed: The column buckling sensor and the cable tension measuring device. The columns of steel structures are prone to buckling due to their slender nature. The buckling sensor is developed by using strain gauges installed in half Wheatstone bridge and measures the strain level of the most ...
Fiber/matrix interface stress analysis of flax-fiber composites under transverse loading considering material nonlinearity
SABUNCUOĞLU, BARIŞ; Cakmakci, Onur; Kadıoğlu, Fevzi Suat (SAGE Publications, 2020-05-01)
Distribution of stresses in fiber/matrix interface in UD flax fiber reinforced composites is investigated under transverse loading and compared with conventional synthetic fibers. Micro-scale finite element models with representative volume elements are generated with various fiber packing types and fiber volume ratios. The study is performed for various strain values, which take into account the material nonlinearity of matrix. The results show that significantly lower stress concentrations exist in the ca...
Cable supported footbridge analysis with construction staging
Caner, Alp (2007-08-28)
The new trend in design of footbridges in Turkey is to utilize the cables. Some of these bridges have fake cables while others partially rely on the cable system. These steel composite bridges typically constructed over the highways span about 40 to 60 meters. It was observed that the bridges with fake cables can be substantially heavier than the ones with functional cables. The focus of this paper is to study importance of tensioning sequence of cables and impact of construction staging on the design force...
Mesh stiffness of micro-spur gears by finite element formulations based on modified couple stress theory
Pehlivanoglu, Yucel; Aydogan, M. Ozgur; SABUNCUOĞLU, BARIŞ (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-05-15)
Finite element formulations developed for micro-sized structures are utilized for the determination of mesh stiffness of micro-spur gear pairs. The equations are based on Modified Couple Stress Theory developed for micro-beams. Timoshenko and Euler-Bernoulli type formulations are used separately to observe the difference. Calculations are performed for micro-gear pairs having two different module types and the stiffness of both double and single mesh regions are obtained. The results reveal the size effect ...
