Cable hanger plate replacement a case study on Bosporus Bridge

2006-07-19
Fatigue at steel bridge structures is one of the major problems that often times do not reveal itself until later stages of damage. Design of fatigue prone members or connections is vital especially for non-redundant fracture critical elements. Cyclic traffic and/or wind loads on bridges can further aggravate stress variations at connections. Bridge members or connections that reach their fatigue life or get damaged due to other reasons may become difficult to replace or rehabilitate especially for suspension bridges. This paper addresses cable hanger plate fatigue problem of a suspension bridge, Bosporus-Istanbul, and also discusses alternatives for hanger plate replacement procedure that will not result in disruption of the traffic. Transfer of cable tensile load to the bridge through alternative paths is necessary for replacing the cable connection plate. Four alternatives are generated for load transfer: a) bypass by supplementary 'V' cables connected to the original cable, b) in-plane cable transfer, c) direct connection to the main suspension cable, and d) inverted 'U' shape bypass frame for improved stability. Cable strain measurements that will be taken during the load transfer process would allow measurement of axial load existing on cables. The strain based measurement of cable force can be compared against vibration based measurement to calibrate for the unknowns such as i) cable boundary conditions, ii) cable bending rigidity, and iii) cable inclination. Furthermore, measurement of cable strains during cable plate replacement enables comparison of axial load on the cable prior to and after the connection plate replacement. Permanent instrumentation of cables would allow health monitoring of cables and determination of traffic-temperature loading versus cable force relations. Evaluation of scouring reliability at bridge abutments
Yanmaz, Ali Melih (2012-04-26)
Serious scouring may take place around bridge abutments during floods, which can lead to considerable damage or structural collapse. Design of abutment footings must, therefore, rely on the estimation of maximum possible depth of scour through the bridge opening. Deterministic scour-prediction equations are based on simplified assumptions and they do not account for randomness of the scouring variables, which leads to an unavoidable risk in footing design. This study is concerned with the development of a n...
Overlapping lattice modeling for concrete fracture simulations using sequentially linear analysis
Aydın, Beyazıt Bestami; Binici, Barış; Tuncay, Kağan; Department of Civil Engineering (2017)
Estimation of the crack location and width in concrete structures is important due to the sustained damage in structures as a result of extreme loads and aging. The location and width of cracks are the most influential parameters for making decisions on the structure service life. Despite significant developments, the computational modelling of concrete fracture initiation and propagation are still challenging tasks. Many different numerical approaches, most of them based on finite element analysis, have be...
Lattice modeling and testing of aerated autoclaved concrete infilled frames
Aydın, Beyazıt Bestami; Binici, Barış; Tuncay, Kağan (2022-01-01)
Significant infill wall damage in reinforced concrete frame buildings was observed in the past earthquakes. A vast number of numerical approaches have been proposed to estimate the non-linear behavior of infilled frames at different scales. Mesoscale lattice models were successfully used in the past to simulate the behavior of reinforced concrete member response. In this study, two-dimensional mesoscale lattice approach with an extended calibration technique was consistently applied to simulate the response...
Structural fire performance of concrete and shotcrete tunnel liners
Caner, Alp; Munfah, N (2005-12-01)
Tunnel liners can suffer significant structural damage when exposed to long duration fires. The resulting damage to the tunnel liner can produce casualties, major service disruptions, and financial loss. Structural fire performance studies have generally focused on buildings exposed to standard fires. Tunnel fires typically have high temperatures and heat release rates compared to building fires. In this paper, an analytical method is provided for assessing the structural fire performance of concrete or the...
Development of a safetyinspection methodology for river bridges
Berk, Aysu; Yanmaz, Ali Melih; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
River bridges get damaged or even collapse because of various reasons, such as development of adverse hydraulic conditions during severe floods, disastrous earthquakes, deficiencies in structural and geotechnical design, material deficiencies, or other unexpected external factors. Failure of service at vital lifelines, bridges, can lead to loss of several lives and properties, traffic disruption, and/or deficiencies in daily usage. Existing structures should be monitored periodically for decision-making and...
