Microplastic Consumption and Its Effect on Respiration Rate and Motility of Calanus helgolandicus From the Marmara Sea
Isinibilir, Melek; Svetlichny, Leonid; Mykitchak, Taras; Turkeri, Ezgi E.; Eryalcin, Kamil Mert; Dojan, Onur; Can, Gulsah; Yuksel, Esin; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (Frontiers Media SA, 2020-12-01)
Consumption rates of polystyrene microplastics (beads of 6, 12, and 26 mu m diameter) and their effects on energy metabolism and motor activity of the copepod Calanus helgolandicus living in the Marmara Sea were investigated. All sizes of microplastic particles were actively consumed and excreted via fecal pellets, however, copepods displayed a significant preference for beads sized 6 mu m. In a mixture of algae and microplastics beads of 6 mu m, microplastics consumption rates linearly (r(2) = 0.78, n = 15...
Microfiltration/ultrafiltration as pretreatment for reclamation of rinsing waters of indigo dyeing
Uzal, Nigmet; Yılmaz, Levent; Yetiş, Ülkü (Elsevier BV, 2009-05-15)
This paper focuses Oil the applicability of microfiltration (MF)/ultrafiltration (UF) as a pretreatment to nanofiltration (NF) for the reclamation of rinsing waters of indigo dyeing process. Two different MF alternatives, single 5 mu m MF and sequential 5 mu m + 0.45 mu m MF, were evaluated as prefiltration to improve the performance of the proceeding UF stage. UF tests performed after 5 pin MF Using 100 kDa, 50 kDa, 20 kDa, 2 kDa and 1 kDa membranes have indicated that all the UF membranes provided the sam...
Microplastics & organics - a comparative study of sorption of triclosan and malachite green onto polyethylene
Ciftci, Goekce; Turkeli, Ulku Dide; Ozen, Elif Yaren; Özdemir, Melek; Sanin, Faika Dilek; İmamoğlu, İpek (2023-02-01)
This study aims to elucidate interaction of organics with microplastics in a comparative manner via the use of two model compounds (i.e., triclosan and malachite green) having different physicochemical properties, onto polyethylene (PE). TCS, is hydrophobic with low solubility , while MG is hydrophilic with high aqueous solubility. Kinetic studies indicate faster sorption (t(eq) = 24 h) and equilibrium studies show much higher capacity (q(e) = 6,921 mg/g) for TCS, when compared to those of MG (t(eq) = 5 d, ...
Microphase Separation of Phenylene Oligomers with Polymeric Side Chains: A Dissipative Particle Dynamics Study
Yıldırım, Erol; Kenarli, Burcu; Demirel, A. Levent (Wiley, 2011-06-22)
The microphase-separated morphologies of p-phenylene oligomers with POx, PCL, PS, and PEO side chains are studied using DPD simulations. It is shown that the microphase-separated morphologies depend significantly on the degree of chemical incompatibility between the components as indicated by the Flory-Huggins interaction parameters. The good agreement of the microphase separated morphologies as simulated by DPD with the experimentally determined thin film morphologies suggests that DPD can produce convinci...
