Investigation of the effect of bending twisting coupling on the loads in wind turbines with superelement blade definition

In this thesis study, the effect of off-axis plies in the spar caps of a wind turbine blade on the damage equivalent loads in a wind turbine system is investigated. The off-axis plies in the spar caps are exploited for load alleviation in the whole turbine system since the off-axis plies induced bending-twisting coupling into blades of wind turbine. Damage equivalent load is used to assess the effect of bend twist coupled blade on the fatigue load reduction in the whole wind turbine system. NREL's 5 MW turb...
Investigation of the effect of bending twisting coupling on the loads in wind turbines with superelement blade definition

Bending-twisting coupling in the composite blades is exploited for load alleviation in the whole turbine system. For the purpose of the study, inverse design of a reference blade is performed such that sectional beam properties of the 3D blade design approximately match the sectional beam properties of NREL's 5MW turbine blade. In order to appropriately account for the bending-twisting coupling effect, dynamic superelement of the blade is created and introduced into the multi-body dynamic model of the wind ...

Investigation of the effect of design parameters on vapor chamber heat transfer characteristic
Karakaya, İrem; Bayer, Özgür; Dursunkaya, Zafer; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2022-11-25)
In this study, a detailed two-phase computational modeling of a vapor chamber is performed. A code written in MATLAB is used to accurately simulate the phase-change process within the wick structure. Conservation of mass is satisfied by matching the evaporated and condensed fluid mass flow rates. Secant Method is used to find vapor temperature. The current model is validated and then, wall temperature, pressure, and mass flow rate distributions of the working fluid are calculated and plotted. Parametric stu...
