This study addresses the quantification of the aerodynamic performance of the ‘Delfly Micro’, which is currently the smallest ornithopter in the ‘Delfly’ family with an X-Wing configuration. Aerodynamic forces were measured on a full-scale ‘Delfly Micro’ by a sophisticated balance system. In view of the influence of the wing flexibility on the performance, wings with varying membrane thicknesses and stiffener orientations were examined in hovering case. To characterize the forward flight regime, aerodynamic forces were also measured with varying free stream velocities and angles of attack in wind tunnel. The results indicate that wing flexibility indeed influences the aerodynamic performance, where a more rigid wing can produce more force, whereas with a lower force to power ratio. According to the wind tunnel data, the ‘Delfly Micro’ can attain a flight speed up to 3 m/s, at a flapping frequency over 30 Hz and angle of attact of 30 degrees.

A computational study of flow entrainment over a stationary/flapping airfoil combination in tandem
Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Platzer, Max F. (1998-01-01)
© 1997, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.Unsteady flowfields over a stationary/flapping airfoil combination in tandem are computed using a Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes solver. The stationary leading airfoil has an experimental profile which promotes flow separation at its trailing edge. The effect of the flapping airfoil on the leading airfoil and the flow reattachment at the trailing edge are investigated by varying the amplitude and frequency of the flapping motion. A single defo...
Experimental and computational evaluation of transient behavior of a typical satellite monopropellant propulsion system
Çilli Tarçın, Ayşegül; Aksel, Mehmet Haluk; Ak, Mehmet Ali; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2014)
In this study, a typical satellite monopropellant propulsion system is numerically modeled by using a commercial software and analyses are conducted regarding the priming operation of satellite propulsion system. Analyses are performed for different tank pressures, downstream line pressures, distance between the tank and orifice, distance between the orifice and latch valve, distance between the latch valve and exit valve, orifice diameter and pipe diameters. Moreover, a test setup is constructed and tests ...
Analysis of Conformal Frequency Selective Surface Radome
Dalkilic, Akin; Alatan, Lale; Top, Can Baris (2014-04-11)
In this paper, the transmission characteristics of a conformal frequency selective surface (FSS) radome which is designed to operate in Ku-band is compared to its planar counterpart. The radome is designed to have narrow band-pass characteristics with a performance that is independent of the polarization and the angle of incidence of the incoming wave. The optimum dimension of the radome is optimized through the simulations of the infinite planar structure. Then, the performance of the conformal structure i...
Measurement of the jet fragmentation function and transverse profile in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Aad, G.; et. al. (2011-11-01)
The jet fragmentation function and transverse profile for jets with 25 GeV < p(Tjet) < 500 GeV and |eta(jet)| < 1.2 produced in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV are presented. The measurement is performed using data with an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1). Jets are reconstructed and their momentum measured using calorimetric information. The momenta of the charged particle constituents are measured using the tracking system. The distributions corrected for detector effects a...
A simplistic flight model for exergy embodiment of composite materials towards nearly-zero exergy aviation
Kilkis, Birol; Kilkis, San; Kılkış, Şiir (2019-01-01)
In this paper, a new model for the embodied exergy payback period is presented, which considers the exergy savings during acceleration and take-off, climb, trim-level cruise, descent and thrust reversal in landing for each flight versus higher exergy embodiment of composites that are used during manufacturing when compared to metals. The research work has ramifications for determining the optimum balance of lightweight and conventional material usage, thus improving the economic and environmental performanc...
